Nvidia bans Geforce graphics for data center

In addition to graphics cards in the Geforce series, Nvidia offers a number of different solutions for data centers and more professional use. These include the company’s Quadro and Tesla models, which have been adapted for the purpose and often come with a significantly higher cost.

Nvidia has now made changes to its user agreement which prevent data centers from using the company’s Geforce software and also graphics cards from the same series as well as the Titan series. It is mentioned, however, that this does not apply to data centers that use the company’s graphics card for mining cryptocurrencies and similar purposes.

No Datacenter Deployment. The SOFTWARE is not licensed for datacenter deployment, except that blockchain processing in a datacenter is permitted.

Nvidia has already started to ensure that companies follow this and has sent letters to several people to draw their attention to the change. One of these is Sakura Internet, which owns one of Japan’s largest data centers, and Nvidia is urging them to stop using Titan X and Titan Xp in their servers.

The change in the user agreement means that data centers will in future have to use the much more expensive Quadro or Tesla models from Nvidia, or switch to solutions from other manufacturers. Nvidia itself also does not mention why the change was made.
