Nvidia ceases to support 3D Vision in future drivers

As in all other markets, it has been possible in the hardware market to distinguish many trends that have come and gone in recent years. One of them is 3D, which for a number of years was popular in both the TV and computer screen market, but died out relatively quickly due to low interest among customers and poor support from developers.

For computers, it was mainly Nvidia that invested in 3D with the technology 3D Vision. Now the company announces that from April 2019 they will cease to support 3D Vision. This means that customers who own a pair of 3D glasses from the company can still use the technology, but Nvidia themselves do not offer any updates for it.

However, they announce that critical problems will be remedied until April 2020 and after that the work will be abandoned completely. The company’s TV software 3DTV Play and 3D Vision Video Player will in future be available free of charge and the former will be included with the driver with version number 418, which will be released in April.

Why Nvidia chooses to discontinue support for 3D Vision is not mentioned, but it is likely that the user base is too small to justify further development. At the same time, they also announce that the official support for Kepler-based graphics cards for the Geforce 600 and 700 series laptops will end from April 2019.

Update: The discontinued support for graphics cards from the Kepler family only applies to products intended for laptops. The Geforce GTX 600 and 700 series for desktops will continue to receive updates. The original news has been updated accordingly.
