Nvidia confirms: RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti return to counter shortage

The indiscretions of the past hours and weeks they wanted Nvidia committed to “revive” partner delivery of “old” GPUs underlying the GeForce RTX 2060 / SUPER and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti cards are really: it has confirmed the same company consulted by PC World.

The current situation sees one huge shortage of video cards in stores, not only the new generation ones (RTX 3000). There production world is also held back by several problems (lack of substrates for packing, GDDR6 memories, etc.) and then there are other phenomena of a commercial nature that go beyond the simple question high (mining and scalping). In short, a perfect storm.

So Nvidia, to bring some video cards into the hands of gamers, has restored a more important production of the old GPUs: the RTX 2060 and the big sister SUPER still represent good solutions for the vast majority of gamers, able to allow the vast audience of competitive eSports games to play with high performance in Full HD and beyond (obviously depends on the title). The TU106 chip is made by TSMC at 12 nanometers, a mature process that shouldn’t be under too much pressure right now. Of course, the problems of shortage of GDDR6 memories and substrates would remain, but perhaps Nvidia considers it enough to escape the clutches of miners.

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, on the other hand, is a card that debuted towards the end of 2016 and that although it’s easy to brand it as obsolete, still allows you to play in Full HD with low details to many eSports titles. It is the second most popular video card in the Steam rankings, and its advantage over the contingency is that it adopts 4GB of GDDR5 memory, and this should allow it to escape the shortage of GDDR6 and mining purchases.

In addition to filling the demand from enthusiasts who buy the video card directly, we must not forget that Nvidia (together with its partners) must also respond to OEMs and system integrators who make preassembled PCs to offer to its customers.

Of course, if we were in an ideal market situation, with the correct availability and prices of new and old solutions, the advice would be to buy something else. In this period of “famine” those with an immediate need do not have many alternatives but to look to the past, more recent or distant, being careful not to be plucked – at the time of RTX 2060 there are few and expensive, while the GTX 1050 Ti is more available but at out-of-scale prices.

All the others, who wish to change GPUs for one reason or another but can “get by” with what they have, simply have to wait for the return to normal (probably the second half of the year).
