Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti more popular than RTX 2080 in pre-bookings

Earlier this month, Nvidia finally unveiled its new architecture “Turing”, which will be the company’s first in a full two years. The unveiling took place during an event in Germany in connection with Gamescom and immediately after, the two new models Geforce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti could be pre-booked at Swedish retailers.

SweClockers has asked several large retailers about how the pre-bookings of the models went and it appears, among other things, that sales went well with all of them. No one wants to go out officially with exactly how many pre-bookings it is about, but with all of them it is about three-digit numbers. Another also says that they broke records during the first hour, compared to previous launches.

According to one of the dealers, the Geforce RTX 2080 Ti accounted for the majority of the 100 pre-bookings they received during the first day, while another says that it was around 200 pre-bookings per model. This is despite a price tag that is around SEK 15,000 for RTX 2080 Ti and around SEK 9,000 for RTX 2080, which can be compared with SEK 8,500 for Geforce GTX 1080 Ti when it was launched.

The price itself is something that has been mentioned in advance, not least among potential buyers who have questioned the high price tag. This is also something one of the retailers that SweClockers talks to remarks on and believes that the high dollar exchange rate has not been to their advantage. Because of this, they did not expect sales at the same level as the Geforce GTX 1000 series.

The reason why the Geforce RTX 2080 Ti is more popular in terms of pre-bookings can only be speculated about. One of the reasons, however, may be that performance tests in advance indicate that the Geforce RTX 2080 does not involve a big step compared to the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti, and the RTX 2080 Ti will therefore be the natural choice for those who want to switch from the previous generation.

It is worth mentioning, however, that so far it is about pre-bookings, something that is not always a good indication of sales at launch. This is because sales figures may fall before the products are actually released, partly due to customers choosing to cancel or not pick up and complete the purchase.

Geforce RTX 2080 Ti is equipped with, among other things, 11 GB of GDDR6 memory and a clock frequency of 1,350 MHz. New for the model and the smaller sibling Geforce RTX 2080 is also the high-speed interface NVLink. The top model is also said to be able to handle over 60 FPS in 4K resolution in modern game titles, something that many current models have problems with.

New to the Geforce RTX 2000 series is Nvidia’s real-time ray tracing technology. In addition, the company talks about new technology for edge smoothing that goes by the name Deep Learning Super-Sampling, or DLSS. It uses AI to deliver similar results as Nvidia’s Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) but with significantly less impact on performance. The new name for Nvidia’s graphics card, RTX, is also the collective name for all the new technologies.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti will be launched on September 20 and have a recommended price tag of SEK 9,199 and SEK 13,999, respectively. This applies to the Founders Edition models in Nvidia’s own online store and recommended prices for models from partner manufacturers are still unknown. These are supposed to be cheaper than Founders Edition, but whether that will be the case remains to be seen.
