Nvidia is working on GTX 980MX and 970MX

The best-equipped gaming laptops on the market all have in common that they use either the Geforce GTX 980M or the GTX 970M as a dedicated graphics card. These use both the Maxwell architecture and the GM204 circuit as their stationary counterparts. AMD offers mobile graphics circuits based on the GCN architecture, but as this does not offer a particularly attractive performance per watt balance, few computer manufacturers use these.

Despite the dominance, the Korean site HWbattle claims that Nvidia is preparing new mobile performance circuits that will be called Geforce GTX 980MX and GTX 970MX. The Geforce GTX 980MX is rumored to be equipped with 1664 CUDA cores, 104 texture units and 64 raster units.

The graphics circuit must be clocked at 941 MHz and the memory must be clocked at 5 GHz, with a total bandwidth of 160 GB / s. The memory should be available in 4 or 8 GB GDDR5 configurations that work against a 256-bit memory bus. The TDP should be at the same level as for the GTX 980M, ie 125 watts.

The Geforce GTX 970MX will be equipped with 1,408 CUDA cores, 88 texture units and 56 raster units. Graphics clock and memory speeds should be the same as for the GTX 980MX. The memory should come in configurations of 3 or 6 GB GDDR5 over a 192 bit wide memory bus, with a total bandwidth of 120 GB / s. Just like with the GTX 970M, the GTX 970MX should have a TDP of 125 watts.

According to the report, both circuits will start to become available during the second quarter of 2016 and then replace the Geforce GTX 980M and 970M on the market.
