Nvidia’s Geforce GTX 1000 series remains at the same price levels as last year

On August 20, Nvidia presented three cards in the new graphics card series Geforce RTX 2000, where the top models Geforce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti will land on store shelves in the near future. The graphics cards are based on the new architecture Turing, where the parade number is spelled ray tracking in real time.

The Geforce RTX 2000 series takes over the baton from the long-lived cards in the Geforce GTX 1000 series, but according to recent information, the two product series will coexist until the beginning of 2019. With only days left until the sharp launch of the new graphics cards, SweClockers takes a closer look on the price history of the Geforce GTX 1000 series over the last 18 months.

Specifically, it is about the average price for the twelve most popular variants of Geforce GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070 and GTX 1060 (6GB), where the prices for the different times are taken from PriceSpy. The dates range from the end of March 2017 to the middle of September 2018, with further impacts in September and November 2017, as well as March and June 2018.

For the graphics cards examined, a price increase of about 18 percent can be seen between November 2017 and March 2018, which may be partly due to the fact that interest and value for Bitcoin increased explosively and the digital currency peaked at over 19,000 USD in December. At the end of August, however, it was reported that sales of graphics cards had decreased since the first quarter of the year.

The declining sales are attributed, among other things, to the declining interest in cryptocurrencies, which have gradually declined in value over the same period. The same applies to the average price for the graphics cards examined, where the reduction since March has averaged eight percent. In percentage terms, the difference is greatest for Geforce GTX 1080, where the price is on average 14 percent lower.

However, most graphics cards are still higher in price compared to September last year, and the impending launch of the Geforce RTX 2000 series has not yet resulted in any drastic price changes. As of September 20, the Geforce RTX 2080 can be purchased from resellers and the price for the company’s reference version is SEK 9,199.

Nvidia recently announced that the launch of the top model RTX 2080 Ti has been postponed until September 27, and the Founders Edition model has a price tag of SEK 13,999. In October, the Geforce RTX 2070 will be available for SEK 6,899. The recommended prices for graphics cards from third-party manufacturers are slightly below those listed for Nvidia’s diton.
