Nvidia’s partner manufacturers must not overclock the Geforce GTX 1070 Ti

When AMD launched the Vega architecture for consumers, it quickly became clear that the Radeon RX Vega 64 more or less matched the Geforce GTX 1080, while the RX Vega 56, which consistently performs better than the GTX 1070, poses a greater threat to Nvidia. The situation has resulted in Nvidia working on a new intermediate model that goes by the name GTX 1070 Ti.

In terms of specifications, this is the GP104 graphics circuit with only one SMX cluster disabled, which together with high clock frequencies means that on paper it is very close to GTX 1080 in terms of performance. This is partially offset by the fact that the GTX 1070 Ti is not equipped with the same fast GDDR5X memory, but stays at 8 GB GDDR5.

Now new data suggests that Nvidia does not intend to make the GTX 1070 Ti the obviously more desirable alternative over the more expensive GTX 1080. This by not allowing partner manufacturers to factory overclock the model and thus cement its performance inferior to the GTX 1080.

The news comes from two independent reports by Eteknix and Expreview, both of which have been in talks with manufacturers. There is also talk that Nvidia may completely lock out the possibility of manual overclocking, a move that would be completely unparalleled in the market.

It is not clear whether overclocking for end users will be locked down and how Nvidia would proceed to achieve this. The most obvious thing is that the company installs some form of software restriction, either in the graphics card’s BIOS or in Nvidia’s Geforce drivers.

It is also rumored that the Geforce GTX 1070 Ti will be announced on October 26, which will be followed by a store availability on November 2. The price is expected to be 429 USD, corresponding to approximately SEK 4,300 including VAT.
