There are graphics cards and graphics cards. In the latter category, the Powercolor Devil 13 Dual R9 290X with two full-featured Hawaii XT clearly falls under the shell. The model is reminiscent of the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 on paper, but the water cooler has been replaced by a solid air cooler.

The specs reveal 2x 2,816 stream processors along with 2x 4GB of GDDR5 memory. The graphics processor operates at up to 1,000 MHz, where the absolute frequency is determined by, among other things, temperature according to AMD technology Powertune.
This means values similar to the Radeon R9 295X2, which in theory should mean performance at the same level. As is well known, however, the figures are not the whole truth, but much depends on how well the cooler is able to handle the heat. When the temperatures run away, the clock frequencies drop, which also depresses the performance.
The graphics card itself is a massive lump with a solid aluminum cooler and three fan fans. The construction takes up three expansion places and weighs almost 2.4 kilos, which is why Powercolor includes a support pin in the package.
The power supply is handled by as many as four 8-pin PCI Express connectors, which together with the motherboard allow the model to use as much as 675 watts. With a little overclocking and other components, a power supply closer to the 1,000 W limit is required to be on the safe side.
As an added bonus, Powercolor also ships with the gaming mouse Razer Ouroboros. It is located separately in the box, complete with cable and a battery. The mouse is worth around SEK 1,000, which, however, pales in comparison with the price tag on the Devil 13 Dual 290X – in round slings SEK 13,000 including VAT.

The projects in the test lab do not always go according to plan. Powercolor Devil 13 exhibits strange behavior in several test systems, where problems with system startup and strange software resets can be noted. The whole thing is spiced up by the fact that one DVI port sporadically stops working in multi-screen mode, which has a number of strange side effects.
After intense discussion and fun with Powercolor, the current theory is that the editorial board’s graphics card simply does not feel right. The copy has been on tour with several media, which means that something may have broken during the journey. Reports from previous reviewers do not point to the same problem that SweClockers is experiencing.
With vacation times approaching and many hours spent on troubleshooting, the result is because the review unfortunately can not be completed. Basing reviews and ratings on a graphics card that does not work properly becomes unfair, and getting a new copy to the editorial office simply takes too long.
However, it is boring to throw otherwise nice performance figures in the lake, which is the basis for this compressed quick look. The next page presents a number of measured values for the curious enthusiast, including game tests in four different resolutions. Please enjoy!
