“Radeon HD 7990 is set”

Already at the launch of the first graphics cards in the Radeon HD 7000 series, AMD said that at least one model with dual graphics processors was included in the planning. Now it seems that the graphics card known as Radeon HD 7990 “New Zealand” will not see the light of day, at least not as an official model from AMD.

A representative from one of AMD’s partner manufacturers, who wishes to remain anonymous, informs SweClockers that Radeon HD 7990 has been canceled. However, this does not prevent Powercolor, HIS and possibly Sapphire from stitching together their own models with two Tahiti XTs and a full 6 GB of GDDR5 memory.

The reason for AMD’s decision not to release any Radeon HD 7990 is said to be that such a graphics card would have too high power consumption and heat generation to be able to compete with the Geforce GTX 690. The main point of a graphics card of this caliber is not to make money but to beat the competitor on the fingers, and thus gain marketing points.
