Radeon HD 7990 – Specifications and Clock Frequencies

Graphics cards with dual processors reign at the top of performance and soon it may be time for a successor to the throne. In about a month, AMD plans to launch a new model in generation 28 nanometers that will take over after today’s Radeon HD 6990.

Chinese Inpai claims to have come across the specifications for what will probably be named the Radeon HD 7990, and just as expected, it is about two Tahiti XT on one and the same circuit board. Each graphics processor contains 2,048 stream processors, a 384-bit memory bus and 3 GB of GDDR5 memory – a total of 4,096 computing units and 6 GB of memory.

The clock frequencies are said to stay at 850 MHz GPU and 5.0 GHz GDDR5 memory, which can be compared to Radeon HD 7970 at 925 MHz and 5.5 GHz respectively. The lower clock frequency is apparently a compromise to keep power consumption at a reasonable level.

According to official plans, the Radeon HD 7990 will be launched sometime in the first quarter, which runs until March 31. However, due to a temporary production stoppage at the semiconductor manufacturer TSMC, AMD may be forced to postpone the introduction to a bit into the second quarter of the year.
