Samsung believes in GDDR6 memory until 2018

With HBM2 on the horizon and HBM3 under development, Samsung is taking the opportunity to build on the familiar memory type GDDR. The plan is to launch GDDR6, which is expected to be a cheaper standard of memory circuits that nevertheless screw up the performance set against GDDR5.

According to Samsung, the new GDDR version will deliver a bandwidth of initially 14 Gbps, with 16 Gbps as the goal for 2020. This is an increase of 60 percent from GDDR5X, which at the time of writing delivers up to 10 Gbps.

The result is an effective bandwidth of 512 GB / s over a 256-bit bus, and 768 GB / s over a 384-bit bus, respectively. In terms of voltage, GDDR6 is expected to remain at the same level as the current GDDR5X, ie 1.35 volts

Samsung hopes that the GDDR6 memory type will be ready sometime in 2018. In the same vein, the manufacturer also hopes to be able to roll out DDR5 circuits for desktops, and LP5 variants for mobile devices.
