Samsung in talks with AMD and Nvidia about licensing graphics technology

The electronics giant Samsung’s investment in the mobile market includes everything from design to custom components. Among these are especially the system circuits in the Exynos series, which at the end of 2015 took a real step forward with an integrated modem and the company’s first self-developed ARM core Exynos M1.

For a number of years, there have also been rumors that Samsung is developing its own graphics architecture, information that stems from the fact that in 2014 the company will have recruited from AMD, Nvidia and Intel. Now new information claims that Samsung may instead turn to one of these parties.

The Samsung-oriented blog Sammobile reports that Samsung is in talks with both AMD and Nvidia about licensing graphics technology, something that could include anything from patent agreements to integrating one of the graphics makers’ architectures into their own Exynos series of system circuits.

According to the information, Nvidia should currently be closest as they currently have an advantage over Pascal (in terms of energy efficiency / editor’s note). This also coincides with Nvidia’s slightly more than three years old ambitions to license its graphics architectures for mobile circuits.

When and if AMD’s or Nvidia’s graphics architectures will find their way into Samsung Exynos is not yet known, but when it comes to early calls, such a potential circuit is at least a couple of years ahead.
