“Sea Islands” will be the next generation graphics card from AMD

That AMD likes islands is obvious, and with the launch of the Radeon HD 7970 “Tahiti XT”, the “Southern Islands” family is in the spotlight in earnest. However, the rumor machine is already talking about the next generation of hardware, and dedicated enthusiasts are combing the internet for clues.

Through the website Linkedin and former AMD engineer Alexander Shternshain, the development name for the next Radeon family can be inadvertently revealed. According to his summary, Shternshain has worked with “Sea Islands”, a previously unknown term that refers to several islands around the southeast coast of the United States.

Although a possible name is out in the open, it is a long way to the “Sea Islands” see the light of day in earnest. The current “Southern Islands” is still not in store, and the successor is expected at the earliest at the turn of the year 2012/2013.
