SK Hynix denies AMD “Big Navi” leak

Yesterday, information was revealed about specifications for AMD’s upcoming flagship Radeon RX 5950 XT, popularly known as “Big Navi”. The information was revealed by a Twitter user who shared what was stated to be a camera image on specifications from the memory manufacturer SK Hynix, which manufactures, among other things, the HBM2 memory graphics card allegedly used.

The camera image revealed a powerful graphics card with 24 GB of HBM2 graphics memory and as many as 5,120 stream processors. Now SK Hynix themselves go out with a press release where the leak is denied with emphasis, where the leaked camera image and the specifications it reveals are called “fake news”.

According to the press release, the motivation for the clear marking against the false information must be to protect customers, partner companies and SK Hynix themselves. Whether the denial means that Big Navi is actually equipped with HBM2 or not and whether other specifications are correct therefore remains to be seen, but that AMD’s performance card will be launched this year has on several occasions been confirmed by the company’s CEO Lisa Su.

In connection with these statements, Lisa Su has also confirmed that the graphics architecture RDNA 2 will reach the market in the year 2020, which potentially means that Big Navi is based on the new architecture. This is made more likely by the fact that AMD is supplying both the processor and graphics part to Microsoft’s game console Xbox Series X, whose graphics part recently received RDNA 2 confirmed.
