Sony uses graphics from AMD in the next Playstation

The next generation of consoles is most likely under full development at Microsoft and Sony. The current generation is rapidly getting older, and despite updates and modernizations, it is basically 5-6 year old hardware.

For Sony, it is about the next version of Playstation, and according to information to Forbes, the hardware may include a graphics circuit from AMD. The magazine quotes former employees, according to which the company is working full time with a graphics solution for the next generation Sony console.

In that case, it means that a remarkable path choice, as the current Playstation 3 uses a graphics circuit based on the Nvidia G70. In competing Xbox 360, however, graphics from the then ATI spin in the form of Xenos, largely based on the architecture R520.

Manufacturing hardware for consoles is advantageous in several ways. Among other things, it opens up for more attention from game developers with a focus on several platforms, in addition, it means a secured income for many years. Where computers are fast becoming obsolete in the eyes of enthusiasts, consoles have a lifespan of up to a decade.

When the next generation Playstation will be launched is still unknown. Rumors abound about a possible revelation during the E3 gaming fair, which kicks off in June 2012.
