[Test] be quiet! Pure Power L8 500Watts

Hi all !
Today I’m going to test an entry-level power supply, the be quiet! Pure Power L8 500 Watts.
be quiet! is a German manufacturer renowned for its coolers, fans and power supplies optimized for silence while having very good performance.
The ATX power supply section at be quiet! is fairly stocked, ranging from the Pure Power L8 (Label 80Plus Bronze and not modular) to the Dark Power Pro (Label 80Plus Gold and fully modular).
The Pure Power L8 series consists of 2 models, the “basic” L8 ranging from 300 to 700 Watts and the L8 CM (semi modular) ranging from 430 to 730 Watts.
The box is sober like all the brand’s products.
At the rear we find important information such as the lengths of the various cables, technical data relating to the power delivered by the power supply and the dimensions of the unit.
Inside the box another cardboard box containing the food wrapped in bubble wrap.
No modular cables here so a big bundle of cables, the cables are however all sheathed.
The content of the bundle is minimalist, but there is everything that is needed:
- 1 manuel
- 1 power cable
- 5 black screws
- 5 hose clamps
On the side of the power supply are the technical data as well as the various labels.

As you can see the be quiet! L8 500 offers an 80Plus Bronze certification (more details here) up to an efficiency of 88%, very close to the silver certification which is at 89% at 50% load. All protections are required and the warranty is 3 years.
The 12v is capable of delivering 456Watts through 2 rails, 130Watts for the 5v and 3.3v combined.

The cables are generally quite long except for the 24-pin ATX and 8-pin CPU cables, they could have benefited from 10cm more for owners of large towers.
The test platform
Food be quiet! L8 500 has been tested on the configuration below:
- Processor: Intel Core i7 875K @ 3,2 Ghz
- Motherboard: Asus P7P55D
- Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 x 2 Go 1600Mhz
- Hard disk: WD Raptor 150 Go
- Graphic card: Sapphire Toxic 5850
The test protocol
The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The readings in charge were taken during an OCCT Power Supply test, the readings at rest were taken after 15mins on the desk.
The power supply has been tested against the Seasonic S12 600 (from 2006), Seasonic X650 and Seasonic P660.
The consumption
The consumption of be quiet! L8 500 is very contained with 83 Watts on the desktop and 363 Watts in OCCT load. Of course, consumption is higher than the Seasonic X650 and P660, but the latter are not in the same price range (around € 150).
The tensions
The voltages are rather stable on this be quiet! Power supply, the 3.3v varies by 1.2%, the 5v by 2.7% and the 12v by 0.7%. Even if this drop is slightly more marked than on the Seasonics, it is in no way alarming, the voltages remain within the ATX standard and the PC has shown no sign of instability.
Noise pollution
Attention : Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative! The readings were taken 15cm from the feed.
An excellent surprise here, the be quiet! is inaudible at rest (in a room at 31dB) and is very quiet under load, only a slight breath is heard when you stick your ear to the power supply. A very good point can be given to the total absence of electronic noise at rest, present very lightly at full load (and you have to stick your ear on the power supply to hear it).
The Seasonic X650 and P660 are silent because, being hybrids, the fans simply did not kick in.
be quiet! is recognized for its products combining performance and reduced noise pollution, and this power supply is no exception to the rule! Taking into consideration that this product is intended for the entry level, the voltages are very good and the consumption is very contained, thanks to the 80Plus Bronze certification.
The strong point of this power supply undoubtedly remains the discretion of the cooling, it is inaudible at rest and remains extremely discreet in load! If you combine that with an almost total absence of electronic noise, you have excellent food that will be forgotten.
Offered at a recommended price of € 69.90 per be quiet! L8 500 will be a very good choice for a gamer or office config, as long as the configuration does not have SLI / Crossfire.
