The Crucial BX100 is therefore a 2.5 ″ SSD with a thickness of 7mm or 9.5mm with the adapter supplied, which will allow it to be installed anywhere even in laptops that require a greater thickness. The weight on the other hand is not specified but the carcass being in aluminum it is clear that it is not him which will explode the weight of the machine, like its big brother the MX200.

Crucial appealed this time to Silicon Motion at the controller level with the SM2246EN, a controller that is not very young but does not have a lot of SSD, to see what it gives in practice! Regarding the memory, it is entrusted to the new 16 nm 128 Gbit MLC from its Micron gentlemen (which is none other than Crucial, well rather the reverse!) Which is more enduring than TLC, the switch to 16nm enables Micro to reduce production costs without sacrificing chip endurance.

In terms of theoretical performance as usual the 120GB version is well castrated in terms of writing speed with a maximum of 185 MB / s, 370 MB / s for the 250 GB version and 450 MB / s for the 500 GB and 1 TB , this may not seem like much for the smallest but you should know that once the operating system is installed (which should be the main use of a 120GB SSD) the writing speed will have very little influence. on the responsiveness of the system. In reading, however, all models enjoy a maximum speed of 535 MB / s, which remains within the standard of SSDs on the market.

Once again I repeat because it is not really clear to everyone but these data are only theoretical and do not really reflect the experience that it will result in practice, indeed even an SSD which offers “only” 400 MB / s in theoretical reading will not necessarily be less good in practice, and even if it is by looking at the benchmarks during current use you will see absolutely no difference, because the end goal is to use the disk and not to do benchmarks, right? 😉
The MTBF is aligned with that of its big brother MX200 namely 1.5 million hours (171 years) which announces a high theoretical reliability, despite the guarantee of “only” 3 years. Prices range from around € 67 for the small 120GB to € 373 for the 1TB version, the 500GB of today’s test is negotiated around € 187 which is very slightly below the MX200 and Samsung 850 Evo.

When reading under ATTO, the performance of the Crucial BX100 500GB is excellent, even surpassing its big brother the MX200 (in its 250 GB version though) to reach a maximum of 560 MB / s, there is really nothing to say and we expected no more from an SSD of this range.

It’s a different story in writing as we can see, the performance is down compared to its big brother MX200 but still remains really very correct with a maximum of 455 MB / s which fits perfectly with the manufacturer data. Even small files are handled well by the small BX100, which does well against the competition.

AS SSD

Under AS SSD in sequential read and with 510 MB / s the BX100 is at the level of the MX200 while it lags when processing small files. In writing on the other hand and as we could see it under ATTO it is less efficient, whether it is during sequential writing (424 MB / s) or small files, which is anyway quite normal, which would like to pay more for a more upscale model if it was less efficient!

Same observation with CrystalDiskMark with very good sequential read performance but which is very weak when small files are used. In writing once again the BX100 is behind the MX200 but also the number of SSDs in the comparison, even if we exceed 450 MB / s, which is already good.

Under PCMARK8 the Crucial BX100 is doing particularly well but as we can see all the other SSDs in the comparison do the same, they are all in a pocket square when it comes to the execution time of each benchmark. Indeed the theoretical benchmarks are good but in the end and as I always say in use there will be really very little difference between all the SSDs on the market, the Crucial BX100 is no exception and offers performance. similar to all the others.

Practical tests

Let’s move on to the practice tests now! For this I will use 2 scenarios, a copy of a 14.1 GB directory made up of 88 Folders and 12 647 files of various sizes and a copy of a single 15.3 GB
file . The source files are in first copied to a RAMDisk (more information here) and then sent to the various SSDs, in this way there will logically be no clamping at the source.

Writing is not the strong point of the BX100, it is quite normal to see that it is far from being the fastest here, 68s to copy the directory and 33s to copy the large file, this is not however not a bad result in itself. The only thing that we can conclude here is that anyway unless you stay with a stopwatch in front of the copy you will not see the difference, and we are talking here only about writing large files / directories which between us does not does not happen that often on an SSD.

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the Crucial BX100 500Go?
Crucial gives us here an entry-level SSD that dispenses with all the frills that very few people use (such as data encryption) while maintaining very decent performance and which will be largely sufficient for everyone. , even gentlemen “gamers” who want a high-end configuration. The range is available in 4 versions ranging from 120GB to 1TB, the only real difference between them (apart from the capacity of course) is the sequential write speed ranging from 185 MB / s for the BX100 120 GB to 450 MB / s for the 500 GB and 1 TB through 370 MB / s for the 250 GB, it goes without saying that even if the 185 MB / s of the smallest is sufficient, a 250 GB model will be much faster.

Offered at 187 € for the BX100 500 GB of today’s test we are about ten euros less than its big brother MX200, even if we would like an even lower price it is clearly a good choice and will not disappoint you, like most SSDs on the market, MLC memory is still a plus compared to its direct competitors (such as the Samsung 850 evo for example).
