After the Aurum S (tested here) and Hyper M (tested here) here we are back at FSP with a model that has a lot more in the pants than the 2 others, I named the Aurum PT 1200! Under this barbaric name hides a power supply equipped with the 80Plus Platinum certification, with a power of 1200 Watts and completely modular, in other words heavy!
Price side we can negotiate the beast around 245 € (accompanied by a warranty of 7 years), which makes it one of the cheapest in its category, even if it will be necessary and the means to acquire a monster like that. Let’s see what the Aurum PT 1200 has in the belly!

As usual FSP has not done in excess and exuberance at the level of the box, there is simply a photo of the product accompanied by the main strengths of the beast, namely the 80Plus Platinum certification, modularity total and 7-year warranty. On top of that of course is the make, model name and horsepower.

At the rear there is a power distribution table, graphs for efficiency and noise pollution, the number of cables as well as the associated connectors and a small listing of the main characteristics. One thing is for sure FSP gets to the point and only offers the important information, not “this is the best food in the world, have an edge during the games” or other such absurd talk, thank you FSP for taking care of me. eyes!

When opening the box we find the manual placed on a thick foam protecting the block itself, to its right the bag stamped with the logo of the brand containing the bundle and modular cables. So far we are in the great classic, nothing that changes other high-end power supplies!

Here is the beast! FSP clearly did not leave the look aside with its Aurum PT, the paint benefits from the same treatment as what I could observe on the Aurum S, namely a grainy touch and a metallic black really the most beautiful effect, it really changes from what you can find in the competition. Let’s take a closer look at all of this.

Side fan we are entitled to a grid of a rather atypical shape with the logo of the brand in its center surrounded by a silver border. The design is rather singular here, we come out of the beaten track a bit at all flat with a honeycomb grid in the center, it is not bad even if quite honestly it will not change much in the end because in all Logically this side will be facing the bottom of the case and will not be visible.

Underneath is a large sticker presenting the power distribution table as well as the various logos of use, in addition to the serial numbers. Sober and functional once again.

On the sides we can see very clearly that sobriety is the main criterion, there are small ventilation holes which most certainly serve to evacuate hot air where there is very little air flow.

Total modularity requires that we only find connectors on this part. The least we can say is that it is well populated! Included are 1 x 24-pin connector, 4 x 6 + 2-pin PCIe connectors, 2 x 4 + 4-pin processor connectors as well as 6 x Molex / Sata peripheral connectors. Suffice to say that it will be possible to connect a real war machine equipped with a lot of graphics cards, peripherals and even 2 processors just in case!

At the rear once again FSP does not do like everyone else with “arrow-shaped” vents which are supposed to direct the air flow and thus improve cooling performance, well I must admit that I have doubts about the real usefulness of the thing 😉

High-end power supply requires all capacitors are Japanese and 105 ° certified (Nippon Chemi-Con, Rubycon), which means that FSP did not lie about the merchandise here. The welds are also perfect, there is really nothing to say about the quality inside the beast.

The fan is a 135mm model from Power Logic, the PLA135S12M to be more precise, given to rotate at a maximum of 2000 RPM for a maximum consumption of 4.8 Watts and equipped with a FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) type bearing supposed to be quieter and at least as durable as ball bearings.

Well I think the table speaks for itself, it’s the orgy at the level of the connectors available, normal for a 1200 Watts power supply you will tell me. 2 8-pin CPU connectors, 8 6 + 2-pin PCIe connectors, 13 Sata connectors, 8 Molex connectors and a molex -> floppy drive adapter. Suffice to say that with that there will be no (or it must be done on purpose) configuration capable of overcoming the impressive number of connectors available, a SLI / Crossfire of 4 cards? No worries, 2 processors? No worries, 10 hard drives? No problem!
PCIe, CPU, and 24-pin cables are round and sleeved while those for Sata and molex devices are flat, a bit odd, but that doesn’t really change much in the end.

Regarding the length even if it is sufficient I would not have said no for a few more centimeters at the level of the 24-pin and the PCIe, but that should not be a problem in 90% of cases.

The FSP Aurum PT 1200 is therefore a power supply equipped with an 80Plus PLatinum certification, therefore the best for the general public today, ensuring excellent performance and therefore very low thermal release. All of the power can be used via its single 12V 100A rail (i.e. 1200 Watts), so enough to power an extraordinary configuration (based on 4 graphics cards for example), there are clearly not many configurations. on the market that will put her out of breath.
The ventilation is entrusted to a Power Logic PLA135S12M fan equipped with an FDP type bearing which will prove particularly enduring and should logically also be very enduring.

Regarding the dimensions we are in the presence of a good big fat block as it should be with its 19 centimeters in length (not counting the cables) for a weight of 3.48 kg, which means that the FSP Aurum PT 1200 will not be not easy to fit into all boxes, you can immediately forget the mini-ITX, but it is not really designed for anyway!
Price side as I have already said we turn around 245 €, which makes it one of the cheapest in its category (100% modular, 80Plus Platinum certification etc ..), suddenly it could be a very good compromise for those who are looking for a lot of power in the context of a gamer config equipped with several graphics cards, if the tests are good!

The test platform

The FSP Aurum PT 1200 power supply has been tested on the configuration below:

The test protocol

The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The load readings were taken at the outlet during an OCCT Power Supply test, the idle readings were taken after 15mins on the desk.

The consumption

Before starting, let’s take a look at the performance of the power supplies compared to the FSP Aurum PT 1200, indeed the different 80Plus certifications will directly influence the consumption, so this will be a good way to have concrete results. Only the S12 600 (this did not yet exist at the time of purchase (but the following versions of this power supply had the classic 80Plus certification, so 80% / 80% / 80% at respectively 20% / 50% / 100% of load)) and FSP Hyper M 500 do not have 80Plus certification.

Regarding consumption, the Aurum PT 1200 from FSP is doing really well, especially knowing the enormous power available which in general means that at a low consumption the efficiency is less good, but not here! Indeed with 74 Watts at rest for 341 Watts in charge we are in the nails with the other 80Plus Platinum power supplies in the comparison, even a little better! As usual, the power supply is clearly not pushed to this last corner with the test setup, but it represents what is done in a high-end configuration designed for gaming today, so what 99% of users are likely to pull at the outlet.
Note that the consumption was read at the plug and for the complete configuration, under load for example and on the 351 Watts “drawn” at the socket the components only consume about 324 Watts of the 550 Watts available.

The tensions

The voltages are very stable, as can be seen from the graph. The 3.3V remains at 3.32V whether at rest or under load, the 5V also does not move with its 5.19V and only the 12V varies very slightly from 12.16V at rest to 12.15V under load, as much to say that the stability is very clearly at the rendezvous!
For the moment the FSP Aurum PT 1200 does not disappoint, but there remains a crucial point when buying a power supply, the noise level! If the other components are not studied for silence then there are generally not really any questions to ask, otherwise it could be a criterion just as important as the stability and / or the efficiency, so let’s see that right now!

Noise pollution

Warning: Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative! The readings were taken 15cm from the feed.

There on the other hand, even if the power supply is generally silent at more than 50 cm (and will most certainly be in a closed box) it should be noted that the fan emits a very hum which increases the noise pollution to 33 dB, nothing serious though because the sound level remains the same under load but it could have been very slightly quieter at rest. Note that apart from the sound of the purring of the engine there is no “Coil whine” to deplore, which is pretty good considering the number of power supplies affected by the phenomenon nowadays!

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the FSP Aurum PT 1200?
FSP has been a very big player in the power supply market for many years now and supplied a lot to other manufacturers, it shows its know-how today with the flagship of the brand, the Aurum PT1200!
The voltages are stable, the consumption is very measured, the internal components are of high level and the modularity is total. It is clear that FSP is doing its best to offer in addition to entry-level products often recommended for their quality / price ratio high-end blocks made for large configurations, the Aurum PT 1200 is a perfect example of this and will be perfect for a configuration equipped with 2, 3 or 4 graphics cards!

The only small complaint I could make is that the fan makes a small hum when idle, nothing that cannot be heard in a configuration with multiple cards (which it is made for) but to note however. Once loaded, however, the fan does not turn faster and will be largely drowned in the noise of other components.
Offered at a price of around 245 € and guaranteed for 7 years, the FSP Aurum PT 1200 has serious advantages for it, if you are looking for a large power supply with an excellent quality / price ratio then it is clearly a very good one. choice.
