Test – FSP Hydro G 650: Review |Specs | CPU Performance | Hashrate| Config| Set-Up – Back at FSP today after the excellent Aurum PT with a new model which aims to target another clientele, that of “modders” and players in particular. Indeed FSP has always produced power supplies with an excellent quality / price ratio but without ever hitting the top of the basket, this is what the brand wants to change today with the new Hydro G series! On the program, an 80Plus Gold certification which should ensure measured consumption, hybrid ventilation (therefore semi-fanless) equipped with an

“FDB” bearing fan, total modularity and the little extra that FSP has added, stickers to be changed on the sides!
Offered at a price of around 120 € the FSP Hydro G 650 will have a hard time facing its competitors, the market is very saturated and you have to have something to stand out.

The front of the box is rather sober, there is a photo of the beast in profile as well as of course the brand, model and power available. In addition, a small quick listing of the main strengths is present, 80Plus Gold certification, hybrid ventilation, total modularity, 100% Japanese capacitors and the 5-year warranty. You can also see the different stickers present in the box and which allow you to “personalize” the block.

The black paint, however, looks very good and should not mark too much during assembly. The 13.5 cm fan takes up an important place and would almost make you forget that the Hydro G is 17 cm in length, which is not nothing and could be difficult to install in a narrow case.

The grille in front of the fan is quite atypical, goodbye the honeycomb or even the circles for double bars that clearly change from the ordinary, nothing that really has an impact on performance but the effort is there .

Below is a label showing the various serial numbers, the usage logos as well as a power distribution table. We can see that FSP provides all of the 650 Watts on the 12V rail for the moment, which is a good point, still happy for a high-end power supply that said.

The cool part of any modular power supply! As we can see everything is well defined, 4 connectors for Sata / Molex peripherals, 2 for PCIe, 1 for the CPU and the 2 connectors for the 24-pin of the motherboard. On the other hand it is here about a big sticker stuck on top of the paint (a little askew in addition), we could have had something cleaner directly printed on the carcass, high-end oblige.

FSP once again goes off the beaten track and offers a grille for the evacuation of hot air that we do not see anywhere else. Of course an on / off button is also present in addition to the mains connector.

High-end power supply requires all capacitors to be 105 ° certified (Nippon Chemi-Con, Rubycon, Teapo for certain polymers though), which means that FSP did not lie about the merchandise here. The welds are also perfect, there is really nothing to say about the quality inside the beast.

The fan is a 135mm model from Power Logic, the PLA135S12M to be more precise, given to rotate at a maximum of 2000 RPM for a maximum consumption of 4.8 Watts and equipped with a FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) type bearing supposed to be quieter and at least as durable as ball bearings.

As we can see the number of connectors available on the FSP Hydro G 650 is more than correct, in addition to the eternal 24-pin and 4 + 4-pin processor there are 4 PCIe 6 + 2-pin connectors distributed over 2 cables. , a total of 10 Sata, 5 molex connectors and a floppy drive connector. The cable length is very good, especially for the 24-pin and 4 + 4-pin processor. The only thing that I could find to say is the length of the PCIe cables, although 50cm is about sufficient for the majority of cases it may be too short in large enclosures, or when cables run out. back of the motherboard.
All cables are black and sheathed as is done almost all the time nowadays, the build quality here is very good.

High-end power supply obliges FSP offers us all of the power for which it is sold on the 12V, with 650 Watts (a single 54.16A rail, we are precise at FSP!), At least we cannot say that ‘ there is a lie about the commodity! The 3.3V and 5V combined can deliver 150 Watts, which is to say that this will suffice for 99% of “gamer” configurations on the market, no offense to these gentlemen who would make everyone buy 750 Watts!

80Plus Gold certification as I said with a maximum efficiency of 92% at 50% load, this will clearly help the power supply to release the minimum heat and therefore the need for cooling will also be less, which is always good for the nuisances sound. To continue on the noise pollution the FSP Hydro G 650 has a hybrid operation, the fan does not turn up to a certain point (temperature or consumption), which should reduce to nothing (or almost) the noise generated at rest. The fan as we saw above is a model with “FDB” bearing from Power Logic 13.5 cm in diameter, 2000 RPM maximum, let’s hope that it does not reach this speed otherwise goodbye our ears.

The beast shows a small overweight with its length of 17 cm, it will be necessary to pay attention to the chosen case so as not to end up on a fait accompli, especially in a mini-ITX case.
Offered at a price of around 120 €, the Hydro G 650 is more or less at the level of its competitors (I am thinking of Corsair and its RMx for example). It comes with a 5-year warranty, which is not the longest warranty period compared to its competitors but still ensures a long period of peace.

The test protocol

The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The load readings were taken at the outlet during an OCCT Power Supply test, the idle readings were taken after 15mins on the desk.

The consumption

Before starting, let’s take a look at the performance of the power supplies compared to the Hydro G 650, indeed the different 80Plus certifications will directly influence consumption, so this will be a good way to have concrete results. Only the S12 600 (this did not yet exist at the time of purchase (but the following versions of this power supply had the classic 80Plus certification, so 80% / 80% / 80% at respectively 20% / 50% / 100% of load)) and FSP Hyper M 500 do not have 80Plus certification.

The FSP Hydro G 650 as one might think behaves very well, with 76 Watts at rest for 347 Watts in charge of the power supply to place itself in the leading pack of the 80Plus Gold power supplies in the comparison, not far from the 80Plus Platinum models. As usual, the power supply is not pushed to its limits with the test configuration, but it represents what is done in a high-end configuration designed for games nowadays, so what 99% of users are likely to pull at the socket.
Note that the consumption was noted at the outlet and for the complete configuration , in load for example and on the 347 Watts “drawn” at the outlet, the components only consume between 320 and 330 Watts of the 650 Watts available.

The tensions

Regarding the voltages here it is excellent, the 5V and 3.3V simply do not move between rest and load with 5.15V and 3.31V respectively, while the 12V goes from 12.20V at rest to 12.22 V in charge, everything here is excellent and shows that FSP did a good job on the stability of the beast.

Noise pollution

Warning: Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative! The readings were taken 15cm from the feed.

Noise nuisance has been the weak point of all the FSP power supplies I have tested so far, but the brand has decided to take matters into its own hands by offering hybrid ventilation and an FDB fan. Admittedly, the result is beyond what I could have thought, in fact the fan simply did not turn on whether at rest or under load, so the beast did not emit the slightest noise, very good!
Unlike the hybrid mode that I could see on some power supplies here FSP decided to start its fan according to the internal temperature rather than the Watts consumed, which avoids instant start as soon as the configuration is on load.

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the FSP Hydro G 650?
FSP intends to come and encroach on the “gamer” type power supply market, even if it has already been there indirectly for a very long time now via the multiple power supplies for which it is the OEM (a good number of be quiet! Power supplies for example) , the brand wants to position itself and is counting on the Hydro G to test the waters!

The exterior build quality is good, even if the sticker glued by hand on the modular side is a bit “cheap”, inside however there is not much to say, the capacitors are all certified to 105 ° and everything is of quality.
The performances are clearly there, both in terms of stability and performance (thank you for the 80Plus Gold certification), the noise level is also almost nonexistent thanks to the “Hybrid” mode linked to the internal temperature of the animal, at rest on fan will never turn and on load if the configuration is not very greedy it should also remain silent. Note also the audible absence of “Coil whine”, at least with the components of the test configuration.
Offered at a price of around 120 € the FSP Hydro G 650 is not the cheapest in its category but it does not suffer from any real defect, it will be able to take care of a gamer configuration without the slightest problem, even well loaded. The only small point that could have been improved is the warranty, 5 years is good but many competitors have 7 years, even if in itself that does not change much.
