Hi all!

It’s not been long since I had the opportunity to get my hands on a Core i7 7700K and test it (which you can find here) and here is Intel offering us a replacement! Should we thank AMD with its Ryzen which drastically brought down prices and therefore forced Intel to renew its Kaby Lake processors so quickly? Difficult to say even if the answer seems to be yes;).
Today is therefore the official release of 8th generation Intel Core processors, the “Coffee Lake” of their little name. Intel has decided to update its Kaby Lake processors by increasing the number of cores across the range while keeping the same nomenclature, so we still find the Core i3, i5 and i7.
Unfortunately for you consumer there will be no question of updating its configuration equipped with a Z170 or Z270 motherboard (and the corresponding Hxx and Bxx series chipsets) with the new processors. A change of motherboard will be mandatory given some changes in the socket itself, which goes from 1151 to 1151v2. Since a disappointment never happens on its own you will also only be entitled to the Z370 chipset (the Asus ROG Maximus X Hero test is available here) for the moment, which is none other than the top model of range which allows overclocking (and which is the only one to do it as usual), it will therefore be necessary to count on a note of approximately 150 € at least.

Intel announces that its new Core i7 8700K processor is the processor to have when you are a gamer. Even if it seems a bit pretentious, we must admit that since we are facing a Core i7 7700K equipped with 2 additional cores it will not be complicated to make a beast of war. To see in the tests that said!

Quite a few changes here as I told you in the introduction. the Core i3s go from 2 physical cores with Hyperthreading (2C / 4T) to 4 physical cores without Hyperthreading, like what we could have on the old Core i5s. Turbo point for these models there with a Core i3 8100 clocked at 3.6 GHz against 4 GHz for the Core i3 83570K, the latter being overclockable like all processors K of the brand. The TDP oscillates between 65W for the 8100 and 91W for the 8370K, the frequency being higher and the possibility of overclocking helping.

The Core i5s are also entitled to an increase of 2 cores, from 4 for the older generations to 6 for Coffee Lake. Unlike the Core i3s, the Turbo Boost is here, we find the Core i5 8400 operating at a base frequency of 2.8 GHz against 4 GHz at most (on 1 core load). The Core i5 8500K meanwhile goes to 3.6 GHz base against 4.3 GHz in Turbo (still 1 core). Of course the 8500K allows overclocking. The difference in the base frequency is quite substantial between the 2 models, the TDP of 65 Watts for the smallest model against 95 Watts once again coming into play.

Now let’s come to the biggest of the range, the Core i7s! There are once again 2 models, one overclockable and the other not (we are starting to find our way around a bit). The Core i7 8700 is the entry level with 6 physical cores for 12 threads (6C / 12T), clocked at 3.2 GHz base for a maximum of 4.6 GHz in Turbo mode. The Core i7 8700K, which is still the guinea pig in our test, is clocked at a base speed of 3.6 GHz for 4.7 GHz in Turbo mode, with access to overclocking.

All this little world has of course a price but it does not change much compared to what we were used to at Intel. The Core i3 8100, i5 8400 and i7 8700 are offered at recommended prices of $ 117, $ 168 and $ 303 which should be around the same price as the older Core i3 6100, i5 6400 and i7 8700. The models studied for overclocking the i3 8350K, i5 8500K and i7 8700K meanwhile are offered at $ 168, $ 257 and $ 359.
