Sacramento Kings, an NBA high school team, has announced the introduction of a blockchain rewards program in its Call the Shot app. Predictive app users can earn tokens that can be later changed into prizes and events. These include autographed T-shirts and basketballs, tickets with preferential seats and other similar prizes. However, tokens cannot be converted into money and cannot be transferred.
The initiative was implemented following a partnership with New Jersey’s blockchain blockchain platform. The new blockchain rewards system will be available starting in the 2019-2020 season. The use of the Call the Shot application is free, being used as a method of involving the fans in the activity of the Sacramento Kings team.
The benefits of blockchain technology
Vivek Ranadivé, CEO and president of the Sacramento Kings, emphasized that the team has begun to discover the benefits of blockchain technology. He stated that
“Transforms the way business is conducted worldwide, ensuring secure transactions across multiple sectors and customers.”
This is not the Sacramento Kings’ first foray into the blockchain and crypto industries. The basketball team became one of the first sports teams to start accepting Bitcoin (BTC) in its store in 2014. Fans can purchase promotional products using cryptocurrencies through a partnership with the BitPay payment processor.
Also, in June 2018, the team partnered with mining hardware maker MiningStore to operate Ethereum (ETH). The funds were used to fund technology education scholarships.
