MOSCOW, 6 Sep — PRIME. The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, said that he was unable to determine who was shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
The IAEA has published a report on the results of the mission to the Zaporozhye NPP
Last week, an IAEA mission headed by General Director Rafael Grossi arrived at the Zaporozhye NPP. The head of the delegation of “Rosatom” and employees of the Zaporizhzhya NPP led the delegation of the IAEA through its territory and showed the sections of the station that were damaged during the shelling of Ukrainian troops.
“I can’t determine this. We don’t have the funds for this. As you know, you would need to observe … a military operation in the region … which not only goes beyond the mandate of the IAEA, but would also require a huge capacity,” he said. Grossi in an interview with CNN.
The IAEA Director General’s report on nuclear safety, security and safeguards of the Agency in Ukraine was published on Tuesday, a significant part of it is devoted to the recent mission of the agency’s experts to ZNPP.
Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near the town of Energodar. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity – the plant has six power units with a capacity of 1 gigawatt each. Since March, it has been under the protection of the Russian military. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that this step was justified in order to avoid leakage of nuclear and radioactive materials. The Ukrainian military continues to regularly shell Enerhodar and the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant adjacent to the city.
