MOSCOW, September 9 — PRIME. Fifteen EU countries supported the introduction of a price limit on gas imports, three more – on supplies from Russia, said Italy’s Minister for Ecological Transition.
“Fifteen countries have spoken in favor of a common price ceiling, three would prefer it only for Russian gas, three have no preliminary opinions but would like long-term economic sustainability checks to be carried out. The last five are either against or neutral,” he said in Brussels on the results of the Council of EU Energy Ministers.
According to him, the countries that voted “no” are geographically closer to Eastern Europe. They, the minister said, are afraid of a complete cessation of the supply of Russian “blue fuel”, although they do not consume much energy.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has previously stated the need to introduce a price ceiling for Russian gas. At the end of August, she also announced that the European Commission is working on operational and longer-term measures to improve the situation against the backdrop of rising electricity prices in the EU, which mainly depend on the cost of blue fuel.
