The Nvidia Geforce RTX 3000 series will be in short supply until the year 2022

The Geforce RTX 3080 graphics card was launched on September 16, 2020, but availability is still well below reasonable levels. Finding a graphics card from the RTX 3000 series in stores can almost be equated with encountering a unicorn and there is still great uncertainty about when the situation can be improved. The bid at the beginning of the year was sometime during the third quarter of the year.

Now the industry magazine Digitimes reports that it is “unlikely” that the lack of Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series will ease during the third quarter of the year – which would mean a brightening only for the winter. Digitime’s report is in line with the recent SweClockers talks with industry insiders, which flag that there are increasing indications that the shortage will persist throughout 2021.

Nvidia has so far been careful to point the finger at a specific factor for the shortcoming, where they only generally talk about component shortages. In several places, however, there have been problems with Samsung, whose 8-nanometer technology is used for Nvidia’s latest generation of graphics circuits. This is reinforced by Digitimes, which claims that Samsung has difficulty producing enough working circuits (yield).

In addition to manufacturing technical difficulties, a significant proportion of graphics cards are purchased from Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series for breaking cryptocurrencies. In an attempt to address this, Nvidia has begun to stifle cryptocurrency performance with new graphics cards, with the Geforce RTX 3060 being the first out. In parallel with this, the CMP series of graphics cards was launched, which are largely based on the Turing architecture and manufactured on an older manufacturing technology from TSMC.

At the same time, the historically poor availability is not expected to have a negative effect on Nvidia’s finances. To maintain its margins, Nvidia has raised the prices of its graphics chips, which are then sold to partner manufacturers, who in turn also raise prices to mitigate the otherwise negative economic effects.
