Travelex forced to pay ransom in Bitcoin

Following an attack by ransomware, Travelex, one of the world's largest money changers, was forced to pay a ransom of $ 2.3 million in Bitcoin in order to relaunch its activities.

New Years Eve, after detecting a virus Of type Ransomware who had compromised some of his services, Travelex had made the decision to put his website offline to prevent its spread.

Cybercriminals were demanding a ransom of $ 2.7 million in cryptocurrencies under penalty of broadcasting sensitive information belonging to customers of the London company.

According to WallStreetJournal, citing a source familiar with the matter, Travelex finally paid the sum of $ 2.3 million to the pirates in order to relaunch its services which had been paralyzed for most of January.

A spokesperson for Travelex said an investigation was still underway, although he declined to comment further on the attack.

Recently, we learned that another extortion software named Ryuk, probably of Russian origin, had stolen 705.80 BTC for an estimated value of more than 3.2 million euros in the space of 5 months.
