Used submarines targeted by Bulgaria. The state does not have one

Stefan Janiew, the Bulgarian defense minister, was recently a guest on Nova TV, where he informed about the state’s intentions. Thanks to this, we know that the country is already in talks with others, wanting to buy used submarines after many years of shedding the advantages they provide.

Bulgaria wants to buy used submarines

At the moment, Bulgaria does not have any submarines in its fleet. It withdrew four Project 633 ships of the former Soviet Union (the last one was withdrawn in 2011) and, despite initial plans, postponed the purchase of more. However, the state does not want to wake up with a hand in the potty, and just as the Lithuanian army will accelerate its modernization through Russian actions, the Bulgarian is going to do so by returning to the idea of buying submarines.

Thanks to the acquisition of submarines, Bulgaria will be able to better protect its maritime borders in the Black Sea, to which access is available e.g. Russia and Turkey. It is certain that the country is not going to buy completely new ships and will therefore choose used ones. While the alleged talks are already underway, we still don’t really know which country (or maybe even countries) they include.
