We remember the legendary 3dfx

When SweClocker’s calendar says “15 years since Nvidia bought up the remnants of 3dfx”, it is given with some kind of flashback. The cocky manufacturer from California took the market by storm in the 90s, and changed the view of game graphics forever – not least for many of us nerds in the editorial office.

But is it really 15 years ago? Well, a little more digging makes the situation a little unclear. To begin with, someone (we are looking at you, Thomas) has miscalculated, and the article from Cnet that describes it all is in fact 16 years old.

In addition, there is the usual smokescreen of corporate and business technical fog. The agreement between the dying 3dfx and Nvidia was initiated as early as 2000, but, like so much else in the industry, dragged on. In addition, as recently as 2009, various negotiations were still going on in courts about who should receive money from the bankruptcy estate.

Either way – a good idea is a good idea, even if the date is for the forest! 3dfx deserves a declaration of love, which is why we have collected nostalgia-scented memories and thoughts from SweClocker’s editorial staff. Nice reading!
