“We work actively with the development of ray tracing”

When Nvidia introduced its RTX 2000 series in 2018, one of the big news was support for several new technologies. One of them is ray tracing in real time, enabling realistic light effects and shadows in games, something that currently can only be used in Battlefield V.

Nvidia is currently the only one to have support for the technology in its graphics cards, but AMD has previously said that they consider it an important technology and something they keep track of. During a question and answer session at CES 2019, AMD’s CEO Lisa Su emphasizes this and says that they are actively working with ray tracing, both on the hardware and software side.

I would say that we are deep into development, and that development is concurrent between hardware and software. And so for us, it’s, you know, what is the consumer going to see? The consumer doesn’t see a lot of benefit today because the other parts of the ecosystem are not ready. I think by the time we talk more about ray tracing, the consumers will see that.

No further details are mentioned, but Su believes that the technology today does not mean any major benefits for consumers. This is because the ecosystem around it is not ready yet, something she hopes it will be when AMD is ready to talk more about ray tracing. The company has a schedule for when this will happen, but it is not something they want to share at present.

This is in line with AMD’s graphics director David Wang’s statement that AMD will respond to the technology, but that it will take a while before it really takes off. He believes that it must be available in both cheaper and more expensive graphics cards before that can happen. It is likely that AMD will wait with the technology for the upcoming Navi, which is planned to be released sometime in 2019.
