According to the authorities of the Chinese city of Puyang, the attacker changed the code of the existing cold wallet of Bitcoin and attracted the trustful holders of the first cryptocurrency to its use.
The suspect was promoting malware through local social networks. The modified code allowed him to access the wallets of his victims and empty them. In total, from March to July 2017, the attacker appropriated about 200 bitcoins. One of the victims said:
“I was invited to the Bitcoin trading group. One of the members of this group wrote to me on Wechat and said that it is not safe to store cryptocurrency on exchanges and that he has a decision on how to save digital accumulations. He sent me a program and said that bitcoins should be stored in a wallet, the address of which it will generate. ”
The suspect tried to cover his tracks by driving stolen bitcoins through various foreign mixers. The detainee does not admit his guilt, however, according to a court decision, interference with computer information systems to obtain confidential information is a violation of the law in China.
Recall that earlier in China they stopped the activity of the multi-billion dollar cryptocurrency pyramid, which also acted as a digital wallet.
