Bloomberg: EC to discuss feasibility of natural gas price cap

MOSCOW, 26 Sep — PRIME. The European Commission plans to discuss on Wednesday the feasibility of introducing a ceiling on natural gas prices, Bloomberg reports, citing diplomats from EU countries.

According to them, the discussion originally scheduled for September 28 on measures to reduce gas prices, mitigate volatility and increase trading volumes in energy markets has been postponed to a later date and could take place next week. It is reported that on Wednesday the European Commission will discuss in the framework of a technical paper whether it is possible to introduce price ceilings.

According to the information of the agency, the document on the marginal gas prices will first be discussed on Wednesday at the level of government representatives, and on September 30 at an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has previously stated the need to introduce a price ceiling for Russian gas. At the end of August, she announced that the European Commission is working on prompt and long-term measures to improve the situation against the backdrop of rising electricity prices in the EU, which mainly depend on the cost of blue fuel. The Council of Energy Ministers of the EU instructed the European Commission to prepare a project for the introduction of a gas price ceiling by October.
