Ford, Volkswagen, Volvo and LG will track cobalt processing on IBM blockchain

Major automakers Ford, Volkswagen and Volvo, as well as technology giant LG, are planning to launch a pilot project to track cobalt processing on the IBM blockchain next year.

The Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN) international consortium has announced the successful completion of a pilot project to protect against production mining methods. In five months, the companies shipped 1.5 tons of Congolese cobalt to three different continents.

While Ford, Volkswagen and LG were already part of the project, Volvo only joined it this week. The auditor of the RCS Global Group solution noted that the pilot project met the standards of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from its launch in the Congolese mine to the Ford Motor Company plant.

Volvo’s head of purchasing at Martina Buchhauser said the Swedish car maker has always paid particular attention to mineral sources.

“With the help of the blockchain, we will take the next step in ensuring complete monitoring of our supply chain and minimizing any risks associated with this in close cooperation with our suppliers,” she said.

RCS Global Group CEO Nicholas Garrett said RSBN hopes to improve the ethical dimension of global supply chains and will use data from testing.

“We have reached new frontiers since we went beyond testing, proving that the benefits of this technology model and guarantees can extend to a wide range of participants at all levels of the supply chain and for other minerals,” he said.

RSBN plans to add more minerals to its tracking platform, including lithium and nickel. Then, tracking methods for tungsten, tantalum, tin and gold will be explored.

“We expect significant positive social impact from our work,” Garrett added.

The IBM blockchain is increasingly being used to track supply chains. Last month, Walmart, the largest US retailer, announced a partnership with IBM to track shrimp shipments from the Andra Pradesh region of India. In addition, in May it became known that the SSP shrimp group of companies based in Ecuador will use the IBM blockchain to ensure product quality control.
