Geforce GTX 780 near Titan in price

In February, Nvidia released the first graphics card with the GK110, which is not only the fastest in the world but the most complex graphics processor of all time. With 7.1 billion transistors, it is a large and thus expensive circuit that is reserved for the most lavish models in Nvidia’s range. Soon, Geforce Titan will be joined by another graphics card with GK110 in the center.

The upcoming model is called the Geforce GTX 780 and is the flagship of the new 700 series. The exact number of computing units is still unknown, but by all accounts it is less than the 2,688 CUDA cores found in Titan. Nvidia also turns down the amount of memory and stays at 3 GB GDDR5.

Now sources to SweClockers state that the Geforce GTX 780 will not be a direct replacement for today’s GTX 680, at least not in terms of price. The new graphics card will be significantly more expensive than its predecessor and will probably only end up with a single thousand kroner under Titan, which currently costs around SEK 9,000 including VAT.

The explanation is based on Nvidia’s business decision. In the case of Titan, partner manufacturers must purchase complete packages of graphics processors, coolers and other components from Nvidia. The GK110 graphics processor is not sold separately. This makes it economically unsustainable to produce tailor-made models because leftover parts, such as the reference cooler, cannot or may not be used for any other product.

For the Geforce GTX 780, partner manufacturers can purchase the GK110 separately and design their own graphics cards from scratch, but the graphics processor is still expensive. At the same time, the partner manufacturers believe that tailor-made models with lavish features are the best way to differentiate the products. This drives up the price picture further.

However, it should be added that much can be changed before launch and that Nvidia often tricks with price information to mislead competitor AMD. The Geforce GTX 780 will be introduced before or in connection with the Computex trade fair in early June.
