GTX1060 6GB GPU mining Overclocking: Hashrate|Power| Benchmark (Cash Cow)

Mining Geforce Gtx 1060 on hashrate, characteristics and profitability (Ethereum)

.

It’s time to revise the hashrate of the Nvidia GTX 1060 video card in mining on various algorithms. Unfortunately, the GPU version with 3 GB of video memory will work for Ethereum mining only until 2019.

After that, graphics cards with 3 GB of video memory on board will no longer be able to store the ETH DAG file, which continues to grow in size.

Therefore, we will consider the 3 GB version of the video card only in the context of the production of Zcash (Equihash).

GTX 1060 6Gb on stock settings and overclocking

In March, when Nvidia introduced the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, two updates were also announced – a GeForce GTX 1060 with 9 Gbps and a GeForce GTX 1080 with 11 Gbps VRAM. Two new cards with increased VRAM were getting a lot of attention. I also liked the GTX 1060 with 9 GHz GDDR5 instead of 8 GHz. In particular, we are talking about ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 OC 6GB 9Gbps, the performance of which we decided to test in mining.

GTX 1060 6Gb has fairly high drain frequencies, but the fun begins after overclocking the video card. Compared to the same GTX 1050 Ti, the GTX 1060 has tremendous overclocking potential. In our test bench, we use a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 6 Gb VK on a 2-core processor and mining software: Claymore AMD + NVIDIA GPU Miner v9.6, CUDA Zcash miner from EWBF and Nvidia optimized Ethminer and NiceHash.

Heshreit with Ethereum extraction at standard frequencies was 19 MHS / sec with a power consumption of 100 W and a video card temperature of 68 degrees Celsius.

The memory of the video card was overclocked to 4700 Mhz (+925 Mhz) – such overclocking can only be achieved using the MSI Afterburner utility, etc., which increased the hash rate for Ethereum mining to 23.7-25 MHS / sec. At the same time, power consumption during operation increased to 120W.

All this makes the Geforce GTX 1060 card one of the most profitable cards to mine considering the current price, Ethereum mining difficulty and electricity cost of $ 0.1 per kWh.

It’s worth mentioning at this point that the GTX 1060’s cooling system does an excellent job of keeping the GPU at 56-60 degrees Celsius at 65% fan speed. The video card could be further overclocked, which led to an increase in the hash rate, but made the mining process unstable.

Mining cryptocurrencies ETH and ZEC on GTX 1060

This model uses faster GDDR5 memory from Samsung, which makes the card attractive in terms of the popular Equihash and Ethash crypto mining algorithms. We wanted to test the performance in mining ETH and ZEC, even though the GTX 1060 memory bus is only 192 bits, and this turned out to be a very limiting factor. The question is how the GTX 1060 can compete with the GTX 1070, which uses slower GDDR5 memory overclocked to 8GHz (i.e. the standard clock in the GTX 1060), although it has a 256-bit bus and significantly more CUDA cores.

When it comes to the performance of Ethereum (ETH) mining using the latest Claymore ETH miner, we were not happy – just 17 MHS at factory settings.

Although, considering the 192-bit bus, we expected the worst result, we hoped that the overclocked memory would compensate for the losses. The GTX 1070 delivered roughly 25 MHS at factory settings, but performance can be increased by overclocking the memory. Overclocking the GTX 1060 9Gbps helped a little, but the numbers still couldn’t go beyond 19 MHS.

The situation with mining Zcash (ZEC) turned out to be better – about 300 Sol / s at factory settings using the EWBF ZEC miner for a GTX 1060 9Gbps card, while the GTX 1070, of course, showed a much better result – above 400, up to 450 460.

It looks like the 9GB of memory in the GTX 1060 doesn’t really impact mining performance, and the card is more suited to gaming. Considering that the cost of the GTX 1060 9Gbps is not much higher than the GTX 1070, in principle there is no point in chasing a large amount of memory, since the performance of the video card is slightly different.

Reduced power consumption of the GTX 1060

If electricity is expensive in your area, you might want to reduce the power consumption of your graphics card in addition to overclocking it. By decreasing the Target Power Limit, you will see your hash rate decrease at the same time, however, the decrease in hash rate is much less intense than the decrease in power consumption. For example, if you reduce Target Power by -30% (70% of the nominal), you will only lose 0.3 MHS / sec, which means that your card will now deliver 23.5-24.7 MHS / sec while consuming only 80 watts. …

Don’t forget to make sure you leave the memory frequencies overclocked to 4700 MHz (+925) to achieve this result.

Even with the regional average cost of electricity at $ 0.1 per kWh, reducing the energy consumption of the VC will be a profitable step. Also, do not forget that lowering the power consumption of the video card will help reduce the temperature of the GPU (in our case, up to 58 degrees Celsius). Mining performance on

It should be noted that the 3GB version of the GTX 1060 performs surprisingly well in Zcash mining. At nominal frequencies, this GPU produces about 300 salts per second in the Zcash miner from EWBF, the most productive miner for this algorithm. Today, if you buy video cards at inflated prices (even on Computer Universe from 20 220 rubles for Palit Geforce GTX 1060 6GB), then the ROI for GTX 1060 and Ethereum mining is 267 days (almost 9 months!).

This is taking into account the power consumption of the video card at an electricity price of $ 0.1 per kWh and excluding the cost of other equipment such as a motherboard, processor, mining power supply, etc.

As you may have heard, there are several different versions of GPU GTX 1060 based GPUs depending on the manufacturer of the video memory. It has been confirmed that video cards with memory from Samsung tend to have a higher hash rate than accelerators with Hynix memory. The Gigabyte GTX 1060 video adapter does not have temperature problems under load, and in most cases, especially if you lower the power consumption limit, it will work with the fans turned off.

Choosing between GTX 1060 and GTX 1070

The graphics cards will be compared using the Ethash (Ethereum, Ethereum classic) and Equihash (Zcash, Zcash classic) algorithms. They are currently the most popular among miners, and these cryptocurrencies are growing very well in price.

We will be choosing between Geforce GTX 1060 and Geforce GTX 1070 cards.

I want to note right away that, as in the case of the Radeon, the favorite is not the best. Looking ahead, I will say that the best results were shown by the Radeon RX470 and Geforce GTX 1060. Well, the Geforce GTX 1060 turned out to be the most practical video card for mining in terms of price / hash rate.

GeForce GTX 10603-6 GB (192 bit)GDDR51152-12801506 MHz2002 MHz16 nm.120 watts1x6Pin
GeForce GTX 10708 GB (256 bit)GDDR519201506 MHz2002 MHz16 nm.150 watts1x8Pin

I also draw your attention to the fact that the Geforce GTX 1070 has an 8-pin power connector, so this must be taken into account when buying a power supply. And this may already be additional costs, which will then have to be reimbursed.

Once again, I note the fact that all video cards were tested in a standard (standard, not overclocked) state, since flashing and overclocking the cards immediately removes the warranty on them.

The table below shows the parameters of the card, and the last two columns indicate the hash rate for Ethash and Equihash, respectively:

GeForce GTX 1060GeForce GTX1060 Palit Dual PCI-E 3072 МБ20 MHz / s290 Hz / s
GeForce GTX 1070GeForce GTX1070 Palit Dual PCI-E 8192 МБ28 Mh / s420 Hz / s

I would like to note the sharp difference in price between GTX 1060 and GTX 1070. If the former costs about 13 thousand rubles, then the second already costs more than 20-22 thousand. For Radeon, this difference was about 3000 rubles. This difference can be paid in games, but not in mining.

Below is the payback table (with and without electricity):

GeForce GTX 1060154 days (19.4% per month)130 days (23% per month)
GeForce GTX 1070185 days (16.2% per month)162 days (18.5% per month)

The power consumption of nVidia is comparable to the Redeon, but the hashrate is higher. This can be seen in the table below:

Drilling rigEnergy consumption:Price Riga (USD):Hashri Etash:Hashrayt Equihash:rub / Mh (Ethash):RUB / hour (Equihash):
4 * GF1060700 watts63 800 s.80 MHz / s1160 Hz / s79755
4 * GF1070850 Wt108 400 р.112 Mh / s1680 Hz / s96764,5

As you can see, the hashing price on Equihash algorithm (which is currently considered the most profitable mining algorithm) is the lowest in GF1060.

The price of the Radeon RX470 is 62.5 rubles, but on the Ethash algorithm, the price will be more interesting on the Radeon RX470. In light of the recent increase in the price of ether, this may be very relevant.
