How to make The Room work on Linux

The Room is not a Linux game, but it works on Linux, thanks to Valve’s excellent Steam Play feature. However, this feature is only available to users through the official Steam client for Linux. So we need to demonstrate how to install Steam on your Linux PC before setting up the game.

Instalar Steam

In order for Steam to work on your Linux PC, you will need to open a terminal window on the Linux desktop. You can open a terminal window on the Linux desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Alternatively, search for “Terminal” in the application menu and run it that way.

With the terminal window open and ready to go, you can begin the Steam installation. Use the installation instructions below that correspond to the Linux operating system you are currently using.

Ubuntu

In Ubuntu, the Steam application is easy to use using the fit to install command below.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

Those on Debian Linux can install Steam but must download the Steam DEB package directly from Valve. To get your hands on the latest Steam DEB bundle, use the wget download command below.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the latest Steam DEB package on your computer, you will be able to install it. Using the dpkg -i command then install Steam on Debian.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

With Steam installed on Debian, finish the installation by correcting any missing dependencies using the apt-get install -f command.

sudo apt-get install -f

Arch Linux

The Steam application is available for Arch Linux users. However, you can only install it by enabling the “Multilib” software repository. Start by opening /etc/pacman.conf in your favorite text editor (as root) to enable this repository.

Once the file is open in the text editor, search for “multilib” and remove the # symbol in front of the line. Also, remove this symbol from the lines directly below. Then save your edits and sync Arch again with the following command.

sudo pacman -Syy

Finally, install Steam on your computer using the following command.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora / OpenSUSE

Steam works on Fedora and OpenSUSE, and users can install the software out of the box with the software repositories included with these operating systems. That being said, the Flatpak version of Steam tends to work better on these operating systems, so we suggest following those instructions.

Flatpak

If you want Steam to work on Linux through Flatpak, you will need to start by adding the Flatpak runtime to your computer. Follow our guide to setting the latest Flatpak runtime on your computer.

With the Flatpak runtime configured on your system, you are ready to install Steam. Using the two commands below, get Steam up and running on your system.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam

Instalar The Room en Linux

Now that Steam is installed, run it on your computer. Then follow the step-by-step instructions below to get The Room working on Linux.

Paso 1: Open the “Steam” menu and select it with the mouse. Once inside the “Steam” menu, select the “Settings” button to access the Steam settings. Then click on the “Steam Play” button to access the Steam Play settings.

Within the Steam Play settings, check the box that says “Enable Steam Play for supported titles” and the box that says “Enable Steam Play for all other titles.” Click “OK” to confirm.

Paso 2: Find the “Shop” button and click on it with your mouse. When you select this button, you will be taken to the Steam store. From here, locate the search box and click on it with your mouse. Type «The Room» and press the Pay in key to see the results.

Paso 3: Look through the search results for “The Room” and select it. When you click on “The Room” in the search results, you will be taken to the game’s Steam store page. From here, locate the green “Add to Cart” button and click on it to purchase the game and add it to your account.

Paso 4: Find the “Library” button and select it with the mouse. When you select this button, you will access your Steam library. From here, search for “The room” in your collection and select it.

Paso 5: After selecting “The Room” from your game library within Steam, find the blue “INSTALL” button and select it with your mouse to begin installing the game. When the installation process is complete, the blue “INSTALL” button will turn into a green “PLAY” button. Select it to start the game.
