Update to 21.10 – GUI

Upgrading to 21.10 via the GUI is the way to go, as the upgrade is easy to do. Not to mention, it takes care of everything in just a few clicks. Here’s how to do it.

First, you will need to update your system so that your current version of Ubuntu (21.04) has the latest packages installed. To update Ubuntu to the latest packages, press the To win On the keyboard, type “Software Updater” and launch it.

With the Software Updater open, it will check for the latest 21.04 updates. When you confirm that you have packages to install, a notification will appear asking you to install the updates. Do it.

With all updates installed, Ubuntu will tell you: “The software on this computer is up to date. However, Ubuntu 21.10 is already available (you have 21.04). Click on the button »Update« to start the update process from 21.10.

Note: The update notification should appear after installing updates on Ubuntu 21.04. If you don’t see the notification on your Ubuntu system, don’t worry. You can force the update by starting a terminal and entering the update-manager -d command.

Update to 21.10 – Terminal

Another way to update to Ubuntu 21.10 is with the terminal. To get started, you will need to open a terminal window on the Ubuntu desktop. press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard to open a terminal. Or search for “Terminal” in the application menu and run it that way.

With the terminal window open, use the apt upgrade command to update Ubuntu software sources and check for updates.

sudo apt update

After running the upgrade command, use the enhance command to install any of the pending updates available for Ubuntu 21.04. These updates must be installed because Ubuntu will not update before installing all the patches.

sudo apt upgrade -y

With the software sources changed from 21.04 to 21.10, the next step is to update Ubuntu. Ubuntu needs to be updated to see the changes made to the “sources.list” file.

sudo apt update

When you walk into the upgrade command, Ubuntu will remove all references to “hirsute” and add the new information that you have added with the sed command.

After running the upgrade , Ubuntu will inform you that it has new packages to install. These packages are update 21.10. To install these packages, run the enhance command below.

sudo apt upgrade -y

With the enhance run the command, most Ubuntu 21.10 packages will be installed. However, most are not all. To install the rest of the packages to finish the updates, run the dist-update command.

sudo dist-upgrade -y
