How to add and sync an AirTag with your iPhone

When you take an AirTag out of the box, the first thing to do is add it to your iPhone and pair it.

1. Unlock your iPhone and enable connections like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Once done, go back to the main screen.
2. In the meantime, remove the battery tab (the thin transparent sheet) from the AirTag. This step will complete the battery circuit and power the tracker.
3. Hold it close to your iPhone and you will see the Connect tab on your phone. Once done, you can name the tracker. For now, Apple lets you choose from Backpack, Bike, Camera, etc.
4. Complete the rest of the registration process to add the tracker to your Apple AirTag account. When done, open the Find My app and the AirTag will appear in the Articles tab. Simple, you see.

Play a sound and find it

To know all the things you can do with this Apple tracker, tap on the tracker name as shown below. A tap on Play Sound will enable a high-pitched sound, while a tap on Find will show you where your AirTag is.

If you want to test its full strength, you can keep it in a far corner of your home, then tap Find to find the tracker via your phone.

If you are sure the tracker is nearby, you can also ask Siri to locate it for you. You can just say “Hey Siri, find my tracker”. If it’s nearby, it will locate it and ring it. Beautiful, is not it?

Change the name of the AirTag

The good thing about the Apple AirTag is that you can give it different names. If you want to change its name, you can do it without any problems. To make the name more fun, you can add an emoji as well. Here’s how you can do it.

• To change the name of your Apple AirTag, go to Items in the Find My app and tap the tracker name.
• Scroll down on the tab until you see the Rename object option. Tap it and choose a new name.

If you are not satisfied with the presets, you can also add a custom name. For that, scroll down in the name list and tap on Custom. Here’s where it gets interesting. Instead of giving it a random name, you can just add an emoji. Nice, we would say.

• Once found, you can safely disable Lost mode.

What happens if you find someone else’s AirTag?

As mentioned above, AirTags have built-in anti-stalking measures. One of the best things is that the tracker will make a sound if it doesn’t detect its owner for a long time. If you happen to find someone else’s AirTag during your evening walks (or mountain hikes), it’s easy to find the owner’s information.

1. If the owner has already activated lost mode, you can touch and hold the smartphone against the white side of the tracker. You will see a notification pop-up on your phone (both Android and iPhone).
2. Tap to open the notification and you will see the owner information on it. Note that NFC should be enabled.

How to reset an AirTag and associate it with another iPhone

The Apple Airtag can also be paired with other iPhones. The reassociation process is quick and easy and the job is done in minutes. Although we would have preferred the recovery mechanism to be a little different.

1. Rotate the back of the tracker until the metal back comes off. Now, take out the battery.
2. Replace the battery, then press the battery until you hear a soft beep. Note that the sound is not loud, you need to put the tracker closer to your ears.
3. Repeat the above process four more times. The fifth sound emitted is slightly different from the previous one, indicating that the tracker is in pairing mode.
4. In the meantime, disconnect the AirTag from the previous phone it was paired with.
5. On your new iPhone, enable all necessary connections such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Now, hold the AirTag close to the phone (the phone should be unlocked) and the connection tab will be visible on the phone screen. Now, you can start using the AirTag again.
