Microsoft reminds customers again that support for Windows 10 version 20H2 ends

In January 2022, the official Microsoft Twitter account announced that the company would start automatically updating devices running Windows 10 version 20H2 to Windows version 21H2.

Windows 10 version 20H2 was originally released in late 2020. Microsoft always supported feature 2 updates for Windows 10 for 18 months, which means Windows 10 version 20H2 is supported until May 2022.

Microsoft changed releases to a single feature update per annual cycle for Windows 10 and also for Windows 11. Consumer versions of these systems receive 24 months of support instead of just 18 months.

Support for Windows 10 version 20H2 officially ends in May 2022. Microsoft will not release updates for consumer versions of the operating system after May 2022 Patch Day on May 10, 2022.

A new support lifecycle announcement on Microsoft’s website informs customers of the end of service.

All consumer versions of Windows 10 will reach end of service in May 2022. Microsoft specifically mentions the following editions of Windows 10 version 20H2:

  • Start Windows 10, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro Education, versión 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 20H2

Enterprise editions (Windows 10 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise, version 20H2) will continue to be supported until May 9, 2023.

Customers who contact Microsoft Support will be prompted to update to the latest version of Windows 10 to continue receiving support.

These editions will no longer receive security updates after May 10, 2022. Customers who contact Microsoft Support after this date will be instructed to update their device to the latest version of Windows 10 to continue receiving support.

Devices with automatic updates enabled will receive the Windows 10 version 21H2 feature update automatically at some point in the coming weeks and months. Windows administrators can run manual update checks to install a newer version of Windows 10 or Windows 11, if the device is supported, at any time.

If Windows Update doesn’t show any new feature updates or the update to Windows 11, you may need to manually update to a new version of Windows to keep your device compatible with security updates. Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant tool helps to update systems manually
