With 20 years as a graphics card maker behind it, Asus thinks it’s time to celebrate, and the occasion is highlighted through a special model of rank. Geforce GTX 980 20th Anniversary Gold Edition has, among other things, a cooler with gold color and hand-picked graphics processor with really frightened clock frequencies.

The specifications reveal a base frequency of 1 317 MHz with a turbo mode in the whole 1 431 MHz. In practical terms, the frequency is often closer to 1,500 MHz in the test lab – a level above what many other models are capable of after manual overclocking.
The card itself is almost a hybrid of the Matrix and Strix families. Overclocking and construction are primarily taken from the Matrix series, while the semi-passive fan mode at low temperature is borrowed from the relatively new Strix.
The distinguishing feature visually is the gold-colored cover and back. A golden hue has also been applied to the plastic covers for the video outputs, and the cardboard of the card has clearly sparkling tendencies on the inside.
Extra power supply is available in the form of dual 8-pin PCI Express in the back edge of the card. Asus offers a total of five video outputs – three Displayports, one HDMI and one DVI.
Quick impressions from the test lab
The Asus Geforce GTX 980 20th Anniversary Gold Edition is a well-built graphics card that, with the exception of color, is very similar to other DirectCU II models. Under load, the card is very quiet, and the performance is impressively high for a Geforce GTX 980.
In addition to the high frequency from the factory, however, there is not much more to pick up, at least not with the included air cooling. SweClocker’s copies can withstand another 40-50 MHz efficient turbo frequency, but after that the adventure stops.
Ultimately, though, it’s the price rather than the hardware that really stands out with Asus’ golden graphics card. The model costs SEK 8,000 in round slings, which is extremely much for a Geforce GTX 980.
However, it is clear that Asus is highly aware of this – the graphics card is only produced in a few copies and the company does not expect any major sales. Anyone who wants a golden edge in everyday life must simply be prepared to dig very deep into their wallet.
