Sales of Huawei smartphones almost halved

The American sanctions imposed on Huawei in late spring 2019 made themselves felt after almost a year and a half. Analytical agency IDC published a report on the alignment of forces in the smartphone market in the fourth quarter of last year and for the entire 2020 as a whole.

To begin with, consider the situation that has developed over the past three months. The main thing is that Huawei has significantly passed, dropping to the fifth line. Its sales decreased by 42.4% or 23.9 million smartphones. The market share decreased compared to the base period from 15.2% to 8.4%. Huawei is the only manufacturer in the top 5 to get worse for the year.

The leader in the period from October to December 2020 was the American company Apple, which managed to increase sales by almost a quarter (22.2%). The volume increased from 73.8 million to 90.1 million devices, and the share – from 19.9% ​​to 23.4%.

Samsung remained in its second place, which it took in the fourth quarter of 2019. At the same time, the sales volume increased from 69.5 million to 73.9 million smartphones, and the market share was 19.1%, i.e. 0.3% more than a year earlier.

The Chinese company Xiaomi closed the top 3. In relative terms, it performed the last quarter of 2020 the best of the top five, increasing sales by 32%. In physical terms, this is about 10 million units. The Beijing manufacturer took 11.2% of the market.

OPPO is located between Xiaomi and Huawei with a share of 8.8% and sales of 33.8 million smartphones. All other companies were able to sell a total of 112.4 million smartphones. They occupied 29.1 markets. In total, 385.9 million devices were sold during the fourth quarter of 2020, which is 4.3% more than in the base period.

Despite the fact that Samsung lost to Apple, according to the results of the entire last year, it retained the first place. True, the sales volume of the South Korean company fell by almost 10% – from 295.8 million to 266.7 million. The market share fell from 21.6% to 20.6%.

Now the main pursuer of the South Korean manufacturer is Apple, which has switched places with Huawei. The Cupertino-based company improved its sales figures in the reporting period by 7.9% (from 191 million to 206.1 million), and its share increased from 13.9% to 15.9%.

Huawei’s sales for the year fell 21.5%. If in the base period it was able to sell 240.6 million smartphones, then in the reported volume of sales decreased to 189 million units. The Shenzhen-based company took only 14.6% of the market.

In 2020, Xiaomi can boast of the most positive dynamics from the top 5, which took the fourth place. It boosted smartphone sales by 17.6%. In physical terms – 22.2 million units. The share of the manufacturer from Beijing was 11.4%.

Despite the fact that OPPO was in the top 5 in the fourth quarter, vivo turned out to be higher at the end of the year. Its indicators in comparison with 2019 practically did not change – 111.7 million versus 110.1 million smartphones sold and the share of 8.6% versus 8.0%.

In the reporting period, all other companies sold a total of 371 million smartphones. The volume of sales decreased by 9.4%. The entire smart phone market in 2020 compared to 2019 decreased by 5.9% – from 1,372.6 million to 1,292.2 million.
