Hi all !

New features have been waiting for AMD since the release of Navi-based GPUs, the RX 5700 and 5700 XT. Indeed, even if the latter are sufficiently powerful to compete with some green GPUs, namely the RTX 2060/2060 Super or even 2070 Super in some cases, the competition from AMD on the entry level was reduced to aging cards. like the RX 580. The very last Radeon RX 5500 XT is supposed to occupy this place at the entry level, it is there for the players wishing to play in Full HD with the advanced details or the fast FPS (Overwatch, Fortnite etc ..). Offered in 4 and 8 GB versions at recommended prices of 183 and 216 €, let’s see what it has in the belly!

Before even looking at the case of the RX 5500 XT, it should be noted that the RX 5500 which was announced a few months ago is ultimately only available on the OEM market. So there won’t be any retail RX 5500s, only the RX 5500 XTs. At the same time, given the difference in technical characteristics, it’s not bad! Indeed, only two things distinguish the two GPUs, the “game” frequency and the TDP!
The DIE used is a Navi 14 XTX, still engraved in 7 nm but much smaller than on the big RX 5700. It measures “only” 158mm², that is to say about 37% less than the Navi 10, the production costs are therefore logically less important. But at the same time, the computing power decreases of course, we go from 36/40 computing units (2304/2560 shaders) for Navi 10 to 22 (1408 shaders) for Navi 14.

As for the operating frequencies, they range from 1717 MHz in game mode to a maximum of 1845 MHz. The memory is entrusted to GDDR6 1750 MHz, like all latest generation cards, whether from AMD or Nvidia (with the exception of the RTX 2080 Super which has GDDR6 2000 MHz chips) but on a 128-bit bus . In terms of consumption, it takes 130 Watts for the full card, it is still better than the 185 Watts displayed by the RX 580 but it remains 30 Watts above the GTX 1650 Super which is the main competitor in the range of green.

Powercolor RX 5500 XT Red Dragon 8 Go

For our test, AMD sent us a card from Powercolor, the RX 5500 XT 8 GB Red Dragon. Even if it is not necessarily very widespread in the territory, the brand has been present for a very long time now and this will be an opportunity to see what it is capable of doing! Compared to the reference characteristics, we note only a slight overclocking of 20 MHz in range mode, going from 1717 to 1737 MHz. Let’s take a closer look at the map!
