UK in talks to build Sizewell C nuclear power plant

MOSCOW, 1 Sep — PRIME. British Treasury Secretary Nadeem Zahavi said the UK is negotiating the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant with the French energy company EDF.

EDF is a major contributor to a project that sees the new nuclear power plant be able to generate enough low-carbon electricity to power 6 million households.

“Negotiations are underway with EDF about the Sizewell C nuclear power plant. It is certainly a good idea to invest in nuclear energy,” Zahavi said on Sky News.

In recent decades, nuclear power in the UK has been in decline. Thus, in 2016, for the first time in 20 years, the construction of the new Hinkley Point NPP began. Against the backdrop of a deepening energy crisis, the British authorities announced in April this year plans to build seven nuclear power plants by 2050 as part of efforts to develop their own sources of electricity.

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the West stepped up sanctions pressure on Russia. Calls to abandon Russian energy sources have become louder. The disruption of established trade routes has led to higher fuel, electricity and food prices in Europe and the United States. In the UK, high inflation and rising costs of living have affected millions of households.
