US invited Mexico to investment programs for the production of chips and electric cars

MOSCOW, September 13 – PRIME. The US government has invited Mexico to participate in investment programs in the production of semiconductors and electric vehicles, Mexican diplomat Marcelo Ebrard said following talks with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“The big thing about the economy today is the invitation to Mexico to be part of North America’s semiconductor, electric vehicle efforts, and that the president also told them about his Sonora Lithium and Clean Energy Plan,” Ebrard said after Blinken and López Obrador’s talks.

The agenda for the high-level talks also included the forthcoming Washington Security Dialogue in October and the North American Leaders’ Summit in December, the minister said.

US President Joe Biden in early August signed into law a $52.7 billion bailout for US semiconductor manufacturers to strengthen its position in competition with China. His administration in 2021 acknowledged the significant dependence of the country’s critical systems, including the defense sector, on Taiwanese microchips. According to experts, Washington’s current policy towards the island carries significant risks if the situation develops into an armed conflict and affects the production of semiconductors in Taiwan supplied to the American market.
