Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22598 Released to Dev and Beta Channels

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22598 has been released to the Dev and Beta channels. It adds some new features to the Media Player app, Windows Spotlight, and fixes a number of bugs.

Media player

The Media Player app on Windows 11 supports 2 views on the artist page. Click the buttons on the right to switch between the album view and the list view that shows all songs by the artist.

A new context menu is available on the Now Playing screen for videos and audio, which you can use to open new files directly. If a music track is playing, the menu will display options to view the album or artist page.

The media player now supports video enhancement sliders that allow you to adjust the movie’s brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation levels. The options are disabled by default and can be accessed through the right-click context menu > Video Settings > Video Enhancements. These features are available in version 11.2203.30.0 of Media Player.

Fixed a bug that prevented devices using Windows Information Protection (EDP) policies from accessing data from protected apps like Outlook, Word, Microsoft Edge, etc. The File Explorer context menu should no longer be partially displayed or transparent. The tooltip on the volume icon will indicate if you are using spatial sound.

The icons in the system tray should work more reliably, but they still can’t be rearranged. Fixed a glitch in Snap Layouts animation. ARM64 devices can now mount the host file system correctly.

Windows 11 Build 22598 will honor the setting to hide taskbar badges, even if Explorer.exe crashes. The functionality of the Delete key has been restored, to delete programs in the Task Manager. The app now supports more keyboard shortcuts, including ALT + N to run a new task, ALT + E to end the task, ALT + V to switch to efficiency mode, etc. CTRL + Tab and CTRL + Shift + Tab can be used to page through the application. Mitigated an issue that prevented the GPU graph from displaying in the performance tab.

Fixed an issue that caused the Start menu to crash when accessed with a gesture. The More button in the Recommended section will no longer cause a crash. Swiping to view the contents of a folder on Home will not close the panel. Resolved a bug that cut off the on-screen display (OSD) that appeared when adjusting volume or brightness using the keyboard. Explorer.exe should not crash when invoking Task View.

Known issues in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22598

An administrative template error may appear when you open Group Policy Editor; you can click OK to dismiss it and access the tool. The context menu in File Explorer has quite a few bugs, selecting the options to rename, copy, paste or delete from the context menu can cause the file manager to crash. Instead, users must use keyboard shortcuts for these functions. The Add to Favorites option is not shown on the new home page in File Explorer, it can be accessed from the “Show more options” menu.

The Widgets panel may not open when using the swipe gesture from the side of the touch screen; will work when accessed from the Widgets icon on the taskbar. Microsoft offers the new builds for Lenovo PC users in China and recommends that these users update to Lenovo PC Manager version 5.0.0.3292 or later, which includes an important fix.

You can switch between Dev and Beta Channel, as the current build is the same for both. Users can download the iso for Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22598 from the Microsoft website. Please refer to the Insider Blog announcement for a full list of known issues and fixes in this build.

Wallpapers are nice, but Microsoft really needs to allow users to remove the “Learn about this picture” icon from the desktop. Moving the Windows Spotlight controls to the Settings app would be a better way to manage it.
