These are a precious way to enjoy the pleasure of a good book in times when it is objectively difficult to read, perhaps while driving, a walk or even during sports.
Audiobooks have always existed, for as long as the means of recording and playback have become available.
Today audiobooks are experiencing a moment of particular attention also thanks to smartphones, which are always with us and therefore allow us to listen to audiobooks in situations that once seemed unthinkable to us.
Listening to audio books in a foreign language is often recommended in language courses for those who study it to improve their command and above all their comprehension skills.
After this brief introduction, let’s go deeper into the best audiobook apps which will make your smartphone or tablet a useful audiobook reader.
Best audiobook apps
Audible (Android e iOS)
This is theAmazon’s app dedicated to audiobooks. On this solution I am thousands of books, podcasts and audio series available, in different languages. Each book is read by a professional storyteller (and this makes a big difference) and in the catalog there are also in our language a good number of best sellers and great classics.
To access you must subscribe, through a monthly subscription of € 9.99 you have unlimited access to all the contents of the catalog, from the most popular to the most niche books. Also, you have them available 30 day free trial, where you can calmly test the quality of the catalog. To take advantage of the free trial days you can register by going to the official Audible page.
Once you have registered for the service, installing the Audible app is a real breeze: just go to the Android or iOS store (iPhone or iPad) and press the “Install” O “Get“. In short, exactly as for the installation of any other app.
Once the download is complete, you can start Audible, log in with your credentials and start listening.
If you want you can also download some audiobooks and podcasts to listen to them later even without an Internet connection.
The use of the app is so immediate that you will immediately find yourself at ease: below is the section “Explore”With featured audio books; at the top is the common magnifying glass to search for a specific book or podcast.
Once you have chosen the book or podcast you like, just press on it to start playing it.
The player has the usual controls (Play / Pause) and the ability to adjust the playback speed and set a timer for the interruption of playback (sleep time).
Storytel (Android e iOS)
This is another great app dedicated to audio books. Storytel is available on both Android and iOS (iPhone and iPad), the service allows you to access a large number of audio books in different languages, including audio books in Italian. Also in this case, as in the case of Audible, the service works on subscription, by doing it you can access the entire catalog available. The subscription costs € 9.99 per month, but you can try the service for free for 14 days, without obligation of renewal.
The Storytel app is available for free on the Android Play Store and App Store (for iPhone and iPad). The installation is as usual canonical, and identical to that of all the other apps.
Once installation is complete, you can launch the app, on the first screen you can enter with your account or register for the service by pressing the “Create an account“.
If this is the first time you use the service, you can also get the 14 free days we were talking about. First you need to log in with the credentials you just registered and then press the “menu“At the top left of the interface (it is characterized by three parallel and horizontal segments), then on the item”Settings“Then on”Account settings“And finally on”Activate your subscription” come on “Ok“. At this point a quick wizard will start.
Once you have accessed Storytel, you are faced with a simple and practical interface. In the section “Recommended”You can find all the trending audio books right now. If you want to search, just press the “menu” button at the top left and press the “Search for“.
After choosing a book, you can decide whether to listen to an excerpt or to switch to full reproduction. The player is essential but offers everything you really need: playback controls, speed adjustment, the ability to add bookmarks and the sleep timer.
Google Books (Android and iOS)
The Google app is preferably dedicated to ebooks, but contains a large section of audio books. Unfortunately, there is no monthly subscription available and you have to buy the books you want to listen to one by one, and some are quite expensive. Fortunately, before buying, you can test the quality of the ebooks with a 5-minute preview.
The app is very simple to use and also has a handy player included with all the appropriate options.

LibriVox (Android e iOS)
If you are looking for a viable application for listen to audiobooks for free and legally, LibriVox is for you.
All the audio books present are free and the project is supported thanks to the commitment of the volunteers, who lend their time and their voice to the reading in a completely free way.
There are only free domain books, so don’t expect recent best sellers.
The project portal is available via the website and as an app for Android and iOS, there are many audio books in many different languages, even in Italian.
If you want to support the project and remove advertising, you can subscribe to the ridiculous amount of 49 cents per month or € 2.49 per year.
The installation as for the other apps we have described is very simple, just go to the store of your platform: the Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS.
The use is also simple: you search by keyword the audiobook you are interested in and once you have found it you can start playing it.
