Chrome OS 88 allows you to log into some sites without passwords

Google on Tuesday announced that the recently released version of the operating system Chrome OS 88 has a feature in the form of faster login to certain sites. The new feature is available thanks to the Web Authentication (WebAuthn) functionality, which appeared on Android back in 2019.

If the site supports WebAuthn, you can log into your account on it without a password. It will be enough to use the pin or fingerprint that you use to log into your Chromebook. Sites supporting this feature include Dropbox, GitHub, Okta. The user will see a dialog box asking to enable WebAuthn.

If two-factor authentication is used, you can put a pin code or a fingerprint for a second confirmation. This will eliminate the need for a security key or smartphone for authorization.

In addition to accelerated entry to sites, the system makes it possible to personalize the lock screen. You can use the Google Photos album or choose an image from the disc to your liking as a screensaver. The lock screen can display the weather forecast and currently running audio, tracks can be paused or skipped. All this is configured in the Settings> Personalization section.
