Circuit shortage causes MSI to focus on a single Radeon RX 6000 series

Among technology enthusiasts, the autumn of 2020 may go down in history for several reasons, where the many new hardware launches are part of this. Both Nvidia and AMD have lifted the cover for new graphics cards, which in terms of performance take real steps up from the previous generation. Extremely low supply is another common and memorable denominator for the fresh products and the lack of products seems to persist for a while longer.

In normal cases, graphics card launches take place in several stages, with reference cards at the forefront and a plethora of models from partner manufacturers in the wake. On the whole, the same roll-out schedule has been used this year as well, but with significantly lower volumes. However, the range of different partner models has not been quite as large as before, where MSI now announces that they have actively chosen to cut back and invest in a single tailored variant of the Radeon 6000 family.

The Taiwanese manufacturer talks about this in a live broadcast with the Radeon RX 6800 XT Gaming X Trio card in the center. The company’s representatives Eric van Beurden and Michiel Berkhout are asked about the plans for the flagship card with a Suprim stamp, to which the answer is that MSI currently only works on tailor-made solutions in the Gaming series. The underlying reason is a lack of graphics chips, where AMD’s variants are currently more difficult to access than Nvidia’s.

The statement explains why MSI’s product pages on Radeon RX 6000 models are empty, in addition to the reference and Gaming X Trio variants. On the Nvidia side, the listed options are significantly more, but as mentioned, the availability in the store is low or non-existent. The representatives explain that it may be relevant with more AMD cards if the situation changes in the future, but that it is currently worth focusing on fewer models.

Competing partner manufacturers such as Asus and Gigabyte list several different variants of the Radeon RX 6000 series on their respective websites, but if they are assigned more circuits or choose to produce extra few cards of each model, one can only speculate. An updated report from German Proshop shows that it is probably about the latter. Since launch, as many as 32 partner cards of the RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 type have been received, signed by Sapphire, Powercolor and Asus.
