How to disable Facebook Messenger chat notifications on Android and iPhone to stop receiving messages from everyone or just one contact

If we have a large number of friends on Facebook, we almost certainly have Facebook Messenger installed on our phone, the app for chatting with Facebook friends on iPhone and Android.
The app itself is not that bad, especially considering other functions of Facebook Messenger, very useful and to be discovered.
What could be annoying instead are the notifications that work differently, becoming much more insistent, intrusive and difficult to disable.
Fortunately, there is a way to completely disable all notifications, if you want, on Android smartphones and iPhones.
In this guide we will show you how to disable notifications for the entire Messenger app or how to silence some too intrusive friend or acquaintance, so as to receive messages normally but without any sound or visual notification on the screen.

1) How to turn off Messenger notifications on Android

Su uno smartphone or tablet Android notifications are more insistent also due to the appearance of “Chat Heads“, that is the smiley faces of the profiles of the people who write to us that always remain present on the screen as” bubbles “, which we can close or move only after receiving the message.
To completely disable Messenger notifications let’s go to the Android settings, let’s open Applications and look for the app in the list Facebook Messenger.
In the new window we select Notifications, so that we can adjust all related settings.

This menu is profoundly different based on the smartphone manufacturer and version of Android installed, but it allows you to always manage the receipt of all notifications.
On some smartphones we can also disable notifications for chats and calls, for new people who add and contact us, for stores and for other app features (calls, previews, etc.).
To eliminate notifications in a less drastic way, we can always open the Messenger app, click on our profile photo at the top, select the menu Notifications and sounds and disable items we don’t want.
Notifications

On some smartphones, the variation of these items does not eliminate the “bubble” previews, which may appear anyway.
The chat bubbles can be removed from the screen by moving them with your finger towards the X that appears at the bottom or alternatively we can disable them completely opening the Messenger app, clicking on our profile photo (in the shape of a dot) at the top and clicking on Chat previews.
Previews

In this way we will no longer receive the hateful “bubbles” of chat while we are in other apps or while we use the phone for other things.

To disable notifications for a single user or group, we open the chat of the annoying user or to block, click on the profile photo at the top, then scroll down to find the entry Notifications.
In the window that appears, click on the item Turn off conversation notifications, then select how long we don’t want to receive notifications from that contact or group.

To be able to block them indefinitely, just activate the voice Until I reactivate them and confirm with OK.

If the contact is particularly annoying or we do not know it, we can also block it, so as to completely prevent the possibility of chatting with us.
To block a contact on Messenger, simply open the app, open the offending conversation, click on the profile photo at the top and then select the button Block.
With this command we will completely block the possibility of receiving or sending contacts from that person and consequently also notifications will be blocked.

From this menu we remove the check mark from the item Allow notifications, so as to block the reception of anything.

To act less drastically we can also act from the app settings; let’s open Messenger, click on our profile photo at the top then go to the menu Notifications.
iOS notifications

Have we received any messages from unknown people?
To stop receiving messages and notifications, it is better to block the contact; we open the app, let’s go to the chat in which we received the unwanted messages, then click on the profile image at the top; scroll through the menu until you find the item Block.
Blocked contacts will no longer be able to send us any messages, no calls or any other elements, thus also blocking all notifications (obviously we too will no longer be able to send messages to the blocked contact, which will disappear from the chat list).

If we want to be invisible on Facebook and consequently also on Messenger, we advise you to read our dedicated guide -> Invisible on Facebook and be offline in chat and Messenger.
