How to disable Search Highlights in Windows 10

Windows 10 devices will soon get the new Featured Search feature that Microsoft introduced in recent Windows 11 Insider builds as well.

Search Featured has been pushed to the Windows 10 Release Preview channel, a development channel for Windows 10 that marks the last step in the development process before tested features make it to stable versions of the operating system.

First introduced by Microsoft in trial versions of its Windows 11 operating system, Search Highlights provides web content to search in Windows. The home interface displays a larger list of apps and files that have been used recently on the device. Most of the interface displays web content, such as trending searches or information about the current day. All of these are linked to Microsoft services like Bing.

The taskbar search box and search home will be regularly updated with content, including fun illustrations, to help you discover more, stay connected, and stay productive. Search Highlights will feature notable and interesting moments from what’s special about each day, such as holidays, anniversaries, and other educational moments in time, both globally and in your region. To see more details at a glance, scroll or click the illustration in the search box.

Explore additional content at the start of search related to every moment, with daily content like the word of the day, Microsoft Rewards offers, trending searches and more. Each day features something different to learn!

Users who sign in with work or school accounts get a different experience. Microsoft shows a people and contacts search option there, and information from Microsoft 365, such as recent documents that have been edited.

The search highlights continue Microsoft’s push to integrate web content from its other services into its Windows operating systems. Widgets in Windows 11 and News & Interests are two great examples of that.

Windows 10 users who only run local searches don’t need the new Featured Search feature and can look for an option to turn it off.

Search highlights will be featured this year on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. Most users may not need it, as the home version is clearly an entertainment feature. The good news is that users can turn it off, but many may have trouble figuring out how to do it on their own.
