Before even getting to the heart of the matter, I think it is my duty to clarify the exact conditions under which YouTube can be installed on a device controlled through Google’s Family Link system.

To begin with, I must tell you immediately that it is not possible to perform this operation if the age of the minor is less than 13 years : Google, according to current regulations, considers children under 13 years of age as kids, thus completely eliminating the possibility of installing YouTube on the devices associated with these profiles.

This type of limit, however, does not involve YouTube Kids – The YouTube version dedicated to children, can be installed without problems, regardless of the age of the child.

In order to obtain it, all you have to do is open the Play Store on the child’s device, type the phrase «YouTube Kids» within the search field located at the top and then give To send, select the first result received and press the button Install displayed on the screen.

If prompted, to complete the installation, enter the password of the Google account owned by the family group administrator.

As for, on the other hand, the devices controlled by Family Link and paired with profiles of users with age over 13 years, the speech is slightly different: YouTube can be installed, always subject to the approval of the family group administrator, as long as you enable access to rated content PEGI 12 or more.

Once the most important aspects of the matter have been clarified, it is time to get to the heart of this guide and explain, in practice, how to install youtube with Family Link.

If you have already paired your child’s device (which, I remind you, must be over 13 years old) with your family group, you can enable the installation of Youtube as follows.

To start, take your smartphone or tablet (in which you have the control account configured), start the application Family Link for parents for Android or iOS and tap the name of profile of the minor.

Then touch the button Manage settings> Google Play > Applications and games.

At this point, put the check mark on the item PEGI 12 or in a less restrictive classification ( PEGI 16, PEGI 18 O Allow all ) and press the button Back / Back, or the button in the shape of arrow, to confirm the change.

Now, if you still intend to manually approve the YouTube installation (and all PEGI 12 content), preventing the child from independently downloading the app, tap on the item Request approval for and put the check mark next to the option All contents.

Once on the results page, tap on the Google video app icon, press the button Install on pc, tap the button Ask now and enter the Google password of a parent associated with the account in use.

When you’re done, tap the button Pass, to start the installation of YouTube on the child’s device: the application will work, from now on, in classic mode.

If you are not in possession of the child’s device, ask your user to start the YouTube installation procedure and press the button Ask in a message attached to the approval screen.

In this case, to make sure the installation is correct, you need to bring your device (the one on which you have configured Family Link for parents), go to notification area system, touch the notification related to Google Play Store approval request and, to finish everything, touch the button Pass attached to the warning message that appears on the screen.

If you wish, you can also activate content restrictions (exclusion of adult content, material inappropriate for the age of the YouTube user, etc.) that can be viewed through the application installed on your child’s terminal. So, take phone or other control device, start the app Family Link for parents and then touch the First name account to check.

With that done, tap on Manage settings > Filters on YouTube and, finally, activate the lever corresponding to the wording YouTube restricted mode.

If, on the other hand, you intend to temporarily block the use of YouTube, open the Family Link parental app, tap the First name of your child’s profile and go to the sections Manage Settings> Android App.

Finally, locate the Youtube in the proposed list, touch your name and put in OFF the lever corresponding to the item Allow application and Okay.

When in doubt, you can unblock YouTube again by following the same steps seen above and resetting the toggle Allow application on ON.

If, on the other hand, your intention is to prevent the minor from accessing YouTube through the Google Chrome browser, go to the section Filters in Google Chrome, touch the item Manage sites located in correspondence with the active restriction (ex. Try to block adult sites ), tap the option locked and, to add YouTube to the list of inaccessible sites, press the button (+) attached to the next screen.

Finally, enter the address youtube.com in the corresponding field and press thebutton. Keep, to confirm the lock. Easier than that?
