How to keep the cell phone screen vertical and not rotate (NO rotation)
– Take a look at these tips, tricks, and solution you can use to make your life much easier with your devices whenever problems arrive and complications which you may find difficult to deal with.
Unless the programmer of an application has it locked to work only in portrait mode (commonly adding the property «Portrait» on the line android:screenOrientation within the main activity in the file manifest.xml) said app will flip in the direction of the device, horizontally or vertically, when automatic rotation is enabled. This is especially annoying when you are lying down using your cell phone and vertical mode (portrait mode in English) is always preferred, for example in the case of YouTube or Netflix videos.
You cannot control the code of the applications, but you can change the Android settings to keep the screen vertical at all times and in any application. You simply have to display the notification panel and toggle the automatic mode for the vertical one or go to the System Settings, Screen option.
Turn off automatic rotation
When you slide down the status bar at the top, you will be able to see a panel with several shortcuts, including the screen orientation. If it is in automatic mode, you simply have to tap on it to deactivate it and leave the vertical mode enabled instead.
Also from Settings, Display
You have to open the Android settings (slide the top bar and touch the gear) and select the “Display” menu. In the list of options there must be one regarding the screen flip, from which you can select the mode «Keep vertical view«.
Unfortunately, some devices do not show this option in the settings, as in the case of my Huawei Y5 with Android 9.
Applications so that the screen does not rotate
As we have seen, it is not normally necessary to install applications to keep the screen vertical on Android, but if for some reason they are needed, this article details some of the best applications for that task, such as SetOrientation The Rotation Control (available for free in the Play Store), which in addition to being used to enable portrait mode (Portrait), are essential when you want to lock the screen in landscape mode, something that in many devices cannot be achieved in the way indicated above (in some mobiles apparently it is possible to lock the screen in the current orientation mode, be it portrait or landscape).
